“Promise.” She smiled. I watched her hips sway as she walked away. I didn’t turn back until she was out the door.

That’s how it always was. If she was in the room, she was the only thing I saw. It had been like that since the day we met. And I realized now it was meant to be that way. I would never get enough of her.

Not even lies and hatred could keep us apart. I would always want her. Need her.

“I need more details,” Matteo said as he relaxed back in his chair.

He nodded his head as I walked to the bar cart in the corner. I poured us both a drink before sitting in front of his desk.

“I was wrong.” My fingers felt like they would break the glass as I said the words for the first time. “She had a miscarriage seven years ago. And I left her alone. She should never let me touch her again.”

I swallowed the alcohol in one gulp, trying to burn away the regret. After I was done, I gave Matteo the whole story. Britney’s lie and everything that happened since I returned, including Gio hitting Ariella.

“That explains why he called me last night claiming Britney was gone and you killed her.” Matteo sighed.

The bitch ran. She was smarter than she looked. I was going to enjoy hunting her down. It would be that much more satisfying when I slit her throat.

“Not yet, but I will.” I smiled, thinking about how I’d make her bleed. Maybe I’d give Gio her eyes as a gift. A reminder of what would happen to him if he touched my woman again.

“He’s not going to like seeing you with her.”

“Suca.”Suck my dick.I snapped. “I refuse to lose her again. We’ll leave if we have to.”

Matteo put his hand up, shaking his head. He stood refilling our drinks and taking the seat next to me. “You don’t have to tell me. I know what it’s like.”

I knew he did. There was still a lot of controversy over him marrying a non-Italian. Someone without a powerful family. A couple people thought she’d even gotten pregnant on purpose to get his money.

“We’ll figure it out. Together.” He rolled his glass on the table as his jaw ticked. “I’m not losing you again.”

I nodded. Unable to express how much it meant to me. Emotion clawed at my throat. Matteo was all I really had in this world. He was like a brother. He’d given me power, skills, money.

But I’d give it all up to keep my nightling. I was glad it wasn’t coming to that.

“I assume you’re back in the cottage then.” He was the only person until today who’d known about the place.

“Thank you for having someone maintain it.” I wanted to sell it after I thought Ariella had betrayed me. I’d only bought it because of her. So we’d have a place to be safe when the baby came. A home. A real one, it would’ve been the first for both of us.

I guess it still was. We could have those things again now. Happy memories. A family. Love.

“I thought you might need it someday.” His lips twitched into a smile.

“What a romantic.” I joked and dodged his punch. But he still landed a smack to the back of my head. Anyone else might’ve got a beating from the bat he was so fond of, but I was more than just a fixer to him.

“What are we going to do about Gio?”

My jaw worked back and forth with frustration. “Haven’t seen anything worth disposing of him yet.”

Matteo sighed deeply as he stared off. I couldn’t imagine the pressure he was under. The people he was responsible for keeping alive. I wouldn’t want it. Not for all the money in the world.

“I could still make him disappear. I don’t need a reason.” I knew I sounded eager, but I would get immense pleasure out of killing Gio. “Just give me the word.”

“We can’t. There’s too much distrust with the men already. Between Carmine’s death by Mila’s hand, my marriage to Emma, and not filling the empty Capo positions, they’re ready to kill me.” He turned the ring on his finger. It bore the Gallo crest and had been worn by every former leader, including his father. “I can’t have them thinking I’ll murder them for looking at me wrong. Carmine ruled like that. I won’t do it.”

“Then we better figure out who you can trust and fast.”
