Thank you again for all the work you and your team did last night. Everyone got their passes without any glitches this AM, and the few that were not done will be done later today.

Please ask Logan to call me to arrange a meeting ASAP, as I need to speak to him face to face. I know he will be sleeping as I’m sure you all are, but it is important.

Thanks again,

Geralt Young.

I down my first mug of coffee before pouring a second and dialling the number at the bottom of the email. It is answered after three rings.

“Mr Young's office.”

“Chels? Is that you? Why the hell aren’t you at home in bed?” I snap.

“Logan? I couldn’t sleep, so I came in. I’m going home in a bit to try again?”

What the fuck is wrong with these people? Who doesn’t need bloody sleep?

“Make sure you do. What did Young want with me?” I ask taking a sip of my coffee. I hear Chels telling me she is patching me through now. He answers on the first ring.

“Young speaking.”

“It’s Logan. What’s so important you had to have me woken up?” I demand drinking the rest of my coffee.

“Sorry, Logan. I didn’t mean for them to wake you; I figured you would all receive the message later in the day.” Young stutters down the line, and I roll my eyes whilst taking another sip of my coffee, hoping it will wake me up a bit.

“Well, I’m awake now, what’s up?” I ask reminding myself I need to be nice to the guy. Drew’s right; we can’t afford to lose this contract. Especially with all the extras I’m charging him for.

“I need to speak to you in person about what I think was happening in that basement. Can you come in, please?”

I want to say no, but instead, I tell him I will be there in fifteen minutes and hang up. Grabbing my keys, I head for the door, wishing I was going to bed instead of to work. But something about that basement has been bugging me, and I think whatever Taylor was doing down there was dodgy shit, and we need to get to the bottom of it.

???

“There in the far corner, do you not see it?”

I look closer and see what looks like a wet patch.

“It’s a bit of damp, or the concrete was a slightly different colour when relayed a couple of years ago,” I answer with a shrug.

“But I never authorised any work to be done down here. I was sure he had done something down, so when I saw the marks on the floor, I figured there had been some leak. I asked Chelsea to pull all the reports to do with this room and saw my signature on a job form for new flooring to be put down. The problem is I was on a two-week cruise when it was signed so that it couldn’t have been me.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose, hoping to chase off the headache brewing from lack of sleep.

“So, what are you saying? That Taylor had some work done down here that you didn’t authorise?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. But the question is, why would he have it done? I know what he used to use this place for when he owned it, and I can’t help.”

“Wow! Back up a minute!” I interrupt, holding up my hands to stop Young from saying more. “Are you saying Taylor used to own this building?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. He sold it to me at a great price, stating he was downgrading to a smaller premises as he didn’t want to work as hard as he was forever.”

“And you are only telling me this now? Because of some new flooring?” I ask, confused. “Mr Young, I am exhausted, and my brain is not firing on all cylinders. So just this once, tell me exactly what Taylor used to do down here when it was his building.”

Young walks to the door and opens it as if checking for anyone listening outside before closing it again and looking more nervous than he was a moment ago.

“Taylor had a nasty streak.”
