“Hey, there you are. I was starting to think you weren’t turning up,” Logan says next to me.

I look up to see Calvin walking into view, his hands shoved in his trouser pockets and a grin on his face.

“Yeah sorry, got held up talking to the O’Reilly’s,” Calvin explains as he sits at the table and takes the beer bottle Logan pushes towards him.

“How did your last day go?” I ask. I know he’s been apprehensive about today. As excited as he is to run our company full-time, he has enjoyed working with his old team and will leave some good friends behind.

“It was good, they were all giving me the typical shit, so I know there’s no hard feelings about me leaving. But as much as I’m going to miss them, I’m looking forward to being able to concentrate on our growing team. I certainly won’t miss working two jobs. I’m past exhausted.” He looks at the two of us and smiles. “So this is it. No going back now. I can now concentrate purely on expanding our company.” He holds his beer out, and we both tap ours against it.

“Cheers, guys. Let the fun times roll,” Logan chimes in next to me before grabbing the menu. “But first food, I’m starving.”

???

“So, who’s this guy you’re meeting with tomorrow?” I ask Calvin as I sit back in the booth and stretch out a little after our meal. I’ll give the English one thing: they can cook some fantastic grub.

“His name is Geralt Young; I met him through the O’Reilly’s. He recently had to change all his security after a trusted friend was anything but. Taylor had supplied all of Young’s security, and when he showed his true colours, Young fired them all. But that left him open to attack, which means he’s been hiring off other people. He needs some of his own guys, and I dropped a hint or two as well as Jason when he saw him.”

“What’s he into? Everything legit?” I ask, picking up my bottle of beer and finishing it.

“Mostly. He has a side hustle with illegal fighters and some legit ones. Other than that, it's all real estate and land ownership. He’s just made his money's worth, and there are always vultures ready to take what they can.” Calvin finishes his beer and places it on the table before running his fingers through his hair.

“What time are you going? Want either of us with you?” Logan asks from his seat. Calvin looks at him and nods.

“I’ve got to be there for ten. I was thinking you could come with me,” he turns his attention to me, and I nod, glad to have something productive to do. “Afterwards, we could go and meet with the team and let them know what they will be doing there.” He turns back to Logan and smiles. “You okay to go and open up the office and check the emails first thing? We should be done by eleven, so we can meet you for lunch before the meeting with the team at one.”

Logan nods as he is more than happy to sit behind the scenes and get the paperwork up to date and the contracts typed up. Logan may be comfortable around the two of us and those who are expected to follow his orders. But he isn’t great with people he’s just met. He’s more likely to come off as unapproachable, which is why it’s better if myself and Calvin do the talking.

“There was one thing Christian said to me that we may need to think about seriously,” Calvin says from his seat as he leans forward and rests his arms on the table. Both Logan and I sit up and pay attention.

“He’s put our names down for various events and fundraisers. He has suggested that when we attend, we take a date. Apparently, it’s a way to make it easier for people to approach us or some shit. But, the first one’s in just over a week, and I have no idea who I’m going to take,” he admits, running a hand over his face.

“Are you telling me you don’t have any women around here just waiting for your call?” Logan teases as I laugh out loud. Calvin never had a problem finding a girl whenever he was on leave. He would have a list as long as his arm of ladies waiting for him to return from deployment. But now I think about it, I don’t remember him mentioning a woman once since he moved here. Maybe there isn’t the usual line of them waiting for him.

“I don’t. I have thrown all my time into work and building our contacts. Women just weren’t a priority. I’ve had a couple of one-night stands, and that’s it.”

“There has to be a way to meet women around here. Singles night? Speed dating?” Logan asks, looking around.

“There’s always Tinder? It seemed to work okay in the States. I’m sure the English also use it,” I point out.

“It’s worth a try. Have either of you used it in the past couple of years?” Calvin asks, looking from Logan to me. Logan shakes his head, which doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. I roll my eyes and pull my phone out of my pocket.

“Do I have to do everything around here? Give me your phone, and I’ll set up your profiles. I’m sure I can make you seem at least a little appealing to the ladies.” Both guys roll their eyes at me as they push their phones across the table, and I start uploading the app before helping them to fill out their profiles. I have no idea how this is going to work, but anything is worth a try. It’s not like we have time to go out there and find a girl the old-fashioned way. We don’t have months on our hands. We have a matter of a week.

I turn to Logan, knowing he will be the most reluctant of us. He doesn’t date, he hasn’t for years, and I’m not sure how he’ll feel about this. I know he will be willing to do it for the sake of the business, but how far is he ready to go to help us get the word out about what services we offer? Surely, we can find a woman who can help with that and even pretend to like one of us as we do it.

Chelsea

It’s Monday morning, and I feel relaxed and refreshed after a lazy weekend with my little girl. We baked cookies, watched her favourite film every day whilst eating popcorn and just enjoyed not having to get up for work or school.

“Chelsea, can you come in here for a moment please?”

I look up from my desk to see Mr Young retreating into his office. Not giving me a chance to gauge what mood he is in.

“Of course, Sir,” I call back as I grab a notepad, a pen and the tablet, his schedule is on, and hurrying after him.

“Close the door, please, Chelsea. Then take a seat.”
