There are three people, all in black, with their faces covered. Each holding what I can only guess are machine guns. The biggest of the guys has his gun aimed at Mr Young who is on his knees with his hands behind his head. I can see where he has been hit and it breaks my heart knowing he is hurt because he is trying to protect me and my baby.

“If we have her, we have more leverage. In fact, I only need your hand. So, unless you tell us where she is, I will send you back to your wife and kids in a fucking body bag.”

“She’s not here, they already left,” Young continues to argue. The guy holding his gun lifts it higher and I know he’s taking aim.

“Then just your hand it is.”

“I’m here,” I call out as I throw open the door and stand with my hands up in the air. “Don’t hurt him, I’ll do whatever you want.” I slowly step out of the room and pray that Luna stays quiet and hidden.

“Where’s the girl?” One of them asks looking behind me.

“I dropped her off at the creche when I arrived. She will be with those kids.” The lie flows smoothly from my lips and I hope they believe me. The guy holding the gun to Mr Young's head looks to the others.

“It’s possibly boss, she was next to the creche when we switched the cameras off.”

I hold my breath as the leader seems to think about it before nodding to the door.

“Check the room.”

I want to jump in front of the door and tell them no. I want to take one of their guns and shoot each of them for daring to try this shit with my daughter in the building. But I can’t. Instead, I have to wait and see how deep a search they will do.

The guy stands behind me and scans the room; he doesn’t look for long. I hear the door close and feel something poke me in the middle of the back, causing my whole body to go ridged.

“It’s clear, nowhere she could hide a girl that size either,” the guy behind me announces before pushing me forward. We come to a stop beside Mr Young, and he hits the back of my knees, causing me to fall, only just catching myself before I face plant the floor.

“Don’t hurt her; she is only my PA. Tell me what you’re after, and I will get it for you,” Young argues next to me. I know he means well, but now I know that Luna is in that room and safe for the time being, I want to get them as far away from her as possible. If the guys do turn up here, I don’t want to risk her getting caught in the crossfire or seeing anyone getting hurt or killed. I need to protect her and lead them away.

“What do you want from the basement?” I ask, trying to act dumb. If I let on I know about the drugs; they will know the guys are aware of what’s going on. Or, they could think I’ve been in on the whole thing and kill me.

“None of your fucking business,” the one in charge snaps before stepping forward. “Get us into the room, and stay beside us until we are free from the building; then maybe, just maybe, you will see your little girl again. Is that understood?”

I nod as tears fill my eyes. One of the guys grabs my arm and pulls me onto my feet. I don’t fight it I need to get them all off this floor. As he leads me away, I turn to look at Mr Young at the same time as the leader grins at him.

“I have a message from Nicholason,” the gun goes off, and I scream as Mr Young falls to the floor.

“You didn’t need to kill him!” I cry out as I see the blood starting to soak his chest.

“He might survive, he might not. Depends if his old ticker can keep going,” the guy laughs as he grabs my arms and pulls them behind my back. I feel something tighten around my wrists and can only guess it’s a cable tie.

“Now, are you going to do as you’re told?”

I nod twice before he leads me to the staircase, which is still filled with smoke but starting to clear.

As we descend towards the basement, I notice how quieter the building is than usual. I hope everyone is outside or hidden away from danger. I look around and see all three guys are with me, which means there is no one left up there with Luna. At least my baby is safe until my men can get there. My eyes fill with tears as I think of my baby up there alone. I don’t bother trying to blink them away, I want these men to know I’m scared; let them see my vulnerable side because it may be the only thing that gets me out of this alive.

I can’t fucking handle this shit.

I have been in hundreds of situations where buildings have been swarmed and people held hostage, yet my family has never been on the wrong side of the barrier before.

I look around at the mayhem that is going on around us. There are eight or nine police cars, five police vans, four fire engines and a handful of ambulances. All the general public is being kept away by the police, and they have agreed to let us run the show. It took some persuading, especially when they realised our woman and child were in there. But they admitted they are out of the training grade here, and we have far better training and experience in these kinds of situations.

I walk over to the van one of our guys brought from the offices where Layton has set up camp. He is currently trying to access the security cameras to see what’s happening inside the building. We have had a number of people report a loud noise like an explosion, but no one could see any damage. We also have no idea how many people are still inside.

“Where do you need us?”
