“We agreed only one present. I’ve got yours,” she protested. “I don’t need to do any more shopping.”

“Yes, you do. You need to help me pick something out.”

“Oh, okay.” He could see her thinking. Maybe it was a gift for his sisters or Suzanna. Maybe it was a gift for his mother, with whom Sutter refused to reconcile, although Saoirse had told him again and again that she wanted him to be at peace with his family and heal the rift. “What is it?”

He took her hand in his, lifted it to his lips, and kissed her ring finger. “A diamond ring.”

Her breath caught. “A-uh, a diamond ring?”

“To go right here.” He kissed her finger again. “Because we’re going to England for Christmas and on Christmas morning, we’ll join my whole family around the tree, and you’ll open your present, and I’ll get down on one knee and propose to you. Will you be my Little wife, Saoirse?”

Time hung for a second. The longest second of Sutter’s life.

Then she swallowed, and smiled, and nodded.

“Yes, Daddy.”

He kissed her to seal their promise to each other. He silently promised her a lifetime of intense happiness and Daddy’s kisses.

He made a silent promise to himself, too. That no matter what dark path his quest for revenge on his father’s murderer took him, he would never, ever lose sight of what was more important to him than that vengeance: the love of his Little.
