Thinking about it all had me swelling up with tears, because it was all getting a little too much for me. I couldn't believe this was happening. I'd hardly done anything wrong, yet I was being punished, and my name was getting dragged in the mud around campus. I heard the whispers when I’d go get my dinner. People thought I was the hussy that got Professor Murphy suspended, because it wasn’t just me going down for Connor’s mistakes. Professor Murphy was too.

My phone buzzed again, and I considered ignoring it because it was probably Tanner, but I knew I couldn’t because I had a taxi picking me up soon.

Unknown:Hello Miss Paige. Your taxi will be with you in approximately ten minutes.

“Knock. Knock.” The banging on the door thudded my heart to its core because I couldn’t believe who had decided to come and visit me on the day I was leaving.

Rachel was leaning into my room, smiling at me like she had a reason to be here. Like we were friends, and she was saying goodbye before the end of summer.

She took in the room, unable to hide her smug satisfaction that there wasn’t an ounce of me left in the room.

“What are you doing here, Rachel?”

Without asking my permission, she took another brazen step into my room.

“Just thought I'd check up on you. You are a pledge, after all.”

“No, I’m not. I told you, I quit the process.”

“You sure? Because I came here to discuss the implications of your suspension. Unfortunately, we cannot accept pledges from anyone under academic scrutiny, and unfortunately, that’s you.”

Her grin was wide, and I could see her glancing over my shoulder to look at herself in the mirror.

“You can’t kick me out. I already quit.”

That creepy smile again. “That's not what it says in our notes.”

I swallowed, wondering if a failed pledging because of academic suspension would somehow end up on my record, but then I remembered that this was Rachel, and fucking with me was her favorite hobby. This was just another sad attempt by her to gain control over me. She’d make sure it was in there even if she didn’t have to.

“Was there something you needed? Because I was on my way out.”

“Yes,” she drawled, like I was supposed to be impressed with how sexy her voice sounded. “I just wanted to see if the rumors were true, and that you were leaving.”

“So, you came to gloat?”

“I came because it was important for my sorority to make sure the people that shouldn't be in it were leaving. You lack the integrity to be a sister.”

“That's rich, coming from a snake like you.” I laughed sarcastically, and it was obvious that Rachel was taken aback by the jibe. She was probably used to people saying yes to her all the time, and doing everything they could to make her feel comfortable. Well, She wasn't getting that from me.

With her hand clutching her chest like she was some kind of Southern Belle, she glared at me incredulously. “A snake? You'd really call the president of the sorority that you were begging to get into a snake? No wonder we didn't want you.”

“Bit of a change of history there, don't you think? I wasn't begging.”

“Your mom was, though.” Rachel dipped her chin, and I could tell from her facial expression that I was showing the emotion on my face at the mere mention of my mother. “How's she doing, by the way?” Her voice dripped with sarcasm. “Cancer’s a real bitch.”

“She's fine.” My lips were pursed. I was so close to throwing my suitcase at her, and knocking her into next week, but I couldn’t do that.

“Good. Anyway, because of the investigation, we are going to have to rescind your offer.” I don't think she could be happier as she said the words, or why she took so much glee in being an asshole.

“You didn’t offer me anything because I quit the process. Now, I would appreciate it if you would leave my room.” I grabbed the handle of my suitcase and started rolling it to the door, hoping I’d somehow accidentally roll over her foot in the process.

She cackled, and I winced. Why did her laugh hurt my ears so much?

“Your room? Not anymore.”

“It's stillherroom, Rachel.” To my surprise, Thea was standing at the door, watching Rachel with folded arms and narrowed eyes. “She might be leaving it for an extended vacation - one that you forced her on, I might add, but she will be back faster than your sense of style. Although, that wouldn't be too hard, since you didn’t have it in the first place.”

I nearly choked with laughter at her words, but I held it in, watching as Rachel took a step back.
