Interrogation?Guess this wasn’t a casual meet and greet. It was business.

At the end of a long hallway, Bennett opened the door to a small office. Inside was the president, whom I recognized from pictures, and a man who was undoubtedly, Draven. He was a taller and younger version of his brother. I loved dark hair and dark eyes. And just enough facial hair that could tickle a woman in the right places.

You’re right Diana. Blaze men are sexy.

I snapped myself back to the task at hand.

He rose from his seat and shook my hand. “Sorry I couldn’t meet you at the airport, but something came up.” He sat back down and pointed across the desk and added, “This is President O’Connor.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, President O’Connor,” I said with a brief nod. Maybe it was years of the FBI, but I no longer smiled in such situations.

I took the seat beside Draven while Bennett stood near the desk. Draven said, “Let me catch you up with what we need from you today.”

“Okay,” I said and waited.

“We have a man in custody. He doesn’t speak English. President O’Connor will question him. I need you to read his body language when he responds,” Draven stated.

“Without knowing what the questions are?” I asked. Draven nodded.

“Unless you don’t think you can’t do it,” Draven said, his tone challenging me.

Oh, I can do it. Just don’t know why I can’t have all the facts.

Smugly I replied, meeting his dark eyes. “What do you want to know?”

“If he’s hiding anything. Lying.”

Would be so much easier if I knew more. Obviously, Draven didn’t trust me enough to share the details.

“When are we going to meet with the suspect?” I asked.

Draven got up and said, “Now if you’re ready.”

Ready? My insides were shaking. This was the first time since I’d been shot that I was back on duty, and someone was already counting on me to make the right call. What if I was wrong again? What if he was guilty and I said he was innocent? Or even worse, he was innocent, and I said he was guilty?I’m not sure I can still do this. Maybe coming here was a mistake. Maybe I should’ve taken the desk job at the FBI.

So much doubt filled me, and I averted looking into Draven’s eyes again in fear he might see it. As I rose from my seat, I noticed Bennett watching me closely, his brow said he was trying to figure me out.Damn it. I’m supposed to do the reading around here.

Quickly, I said, “Let’s go.”

We all left the office and followed Reesa and Bennett to an elevator. We went up to the top floor and I realized now the suspect was also a patient. I didn’t have to guess which room was his. There were two policemen standing outside his door.

I can do this. I can do this.

Draven’s deep voice asked quietly, “Are you okay?”

I nodded. “Why do you ask?”

“You seem…a little unsteady,” he replied.

Looking up at him I said, “Long flight, no sleep and I haven’t eaten. I’ll be fine tomorrow. Now let’s get this over with.”

Draven seemed to accept my answers and said, “This shouldn’t take long. Once we have your answer, I’ll make sure you are brought to the resort where you can rest and eat.”

I nodded as we entered the suspect’s room. He was connected to several different medical monitoring devices. He was shirtless and I noticed a large white bandage taped onto the right side of his chest with a drain tube coming out from beneath. He was in rough shape but didn’t appear to be critical. From the look on the president’s face, she didn’t seem to care. Whatever he had done, she had no sympathy for his current situation.

You could cut the tension in the room with a knife. I’d been involved in many interrogations but never had the president insisted on handling it. How things were handled in Tabiq was going to take some time to get accustomed to.

President O’Connor walked over and stood beside the bed with Bennett nearby. Draven and I stayed at the foot of the bed so I would be able to observe his reaction to her questions. The president began to speak in her native language. The man turned his face from her, but I could still see it. He didn’t like whatever she was saying. O’Connor snapped what sounded like a warning at him. He closed his eyes and then begrudgingly turned back to face her.
