“So you’re a plague,” she deadpanned.

“We can be. Especially when bratty ass little girls think they can come into our circle, running shit.”

“I know you’re the leader,” she said, sarcasm dripping from her syllables.

“We’re not looking for new members and women aren’t allowed.”

“You sound like a fucking ten-year-old,” she fussed then proceeded to mock me in a stupid-sounding voice. “No girls allowed.” She stopped to fold her face into an unimpressed frown. “Get the fuck out of here with that shit.”

“Yeah, okay. Talk your shit, baby. You’re still not getting in.” I pushed off the lockers and headed to the glass doors on the other side of the hall.

“Okay, I’ll get in touch with the police captain tomorrow. He’s been anxious to know if I remembered anything else about the robbery. I mean, I was so shaken that…I didn’t remember everything.” She added faux tears to her voice and I wanted to choke her until she passed out.

“Goddammit!” I roared, making her flinch. It was so quick and slight that I wouldn’t have noticed if I weren’t locked in on her like a fucking missile. “No, this is not how shit goes. We’re a fucking brotherhood. Not a gender-neutral-hood.”

“You could be,” she said casually. I turned back toward her and leaned down so that I could look into her brown eyes. I already knew what I would find there. Cognac warmth and a crackling fire ready to explode.

“I said no. End of discussion.”

“Not the end,” she said.

“You run your mouth. We kill you. You won’t see it coming.”

“I’m sure I will. You know why? Because as scary as the Kings are, you’re not smart.” She walked closer to me, tapping my temple with her middle and pointer fingers. I snatched her fingers in my hand and applied pressure until she pouted. Her lips were so fucking full.

“Keep your fingers to yourself before I break them,” I cautioned.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I absolutely would.” I paused then frowned. “Did you call me and my men stupid?”

“If that’s what you heard. I can’t help how the message comes out. I just deliver it.”

“You deliver it from a smart-ass mouth and it’s pissing me off. Watch how you talk to me. You already know my name, right?” I touched her chin and she turned her head away from me. “Treat me like my namesake and we’ll get along fine.”

“Oh, all this time I had no idea your name was jackass. Noted.” A smug grin crossed her lips.

“Nah, please don’t treat me like your past boyfriends. You seem like you love bitch-made niggas.”

“Whatever.” She tried to play it off but she was irritated. Good. “And yes, I called y'all stupid because you are. You’re too loud and obnoxious. If you want to rob a bank, you don’t come in with guns blazing. You’re going to get caught. You hit them from the inside. Quietly, and with a smile.” She flashed her perfect smile and I noticed how pretty her deep brown skin was. A second later, her words blinked in my mind.

“Quietly and with a smile? Is that how you do it, baby?” I quizzed.

“Stop. Fucking. Calling me that.”

“No,” I said simply, giving her a dose of her own defiant medicine.

“Anyway,” she flicked her hand and continued, “Yes. If you must know, that’s how I do it. Do you know how much more money we could all make with me on your team?” Dollar signs flashed green in her brown pools.

We had one thing in common, it seemed. We both wanted more.

“So little Jupiter, the bank teller is a thief, huh?”

“A damn good one. Better than you and your loud ass boys.”

“Fuck you,” I spat involuntarily. It was routine whenever someone insulted me or my brothers and Jupiter was pushing her luck. She must have sensed my ruffled feathers because she held her hands up and smiled.

“Okay,” she sighed. “But just think of the money. The way I see it, you make a grip doing your little takeover style, gang shit, right? But I make the same amount with fraud and embezzlement. Together? We could get disgustingly rich and have the entire city shook.” The gleam in her eyes told me we had more than money in common. We had a love for power too.
