“You got pictures of the cameras?” Sumo asked once I got to the park.

“Yup. It’ll be an easy hit,” I told him.

We had an apartment off Crenshaw but whenever it was nice outside, Sumo, Pretty Boy, Truck, and I met up at Darby Park. Those were my boys. My brothers.

The four of us made up the founding members of the Legion of Kings with me being the ringleader. We were the fastest-growing gang in Inglewood. I had a total of fifty-three men that spanned the city who reported to me.

Legion of Kings started with me and my boys robbing people because we needed money to eat. We were all foster kids who lived in the same group home, Ocean View Home for Boys. We were tired of not having enough, so we started taking that shit. I was the first to get hold of a gun when I was a junior in high school and rob someone. When I got the money, I split it with my brothers.

Things took off from there. We were a brotherhood of bastards and we ran shit alone for years until more men showed interest. They saw the loyalty we had to each other and the way we all broke bread together. They saw how fly we were and how much money we had too.

So, the four kings made a pact that we’d make every man under us kings as well. If one ate, we all ate. Either you ran with the Legion of Kings, you ran from us. We were bastards in every sense of the word. We silenced snitches and everyone who thought they were taking over our territory. After a while, everyone learned to fear The Kings.

Whoever acted like our gang was too young to earn respect, I told them they should fear us, they didn’t have to respect us. We respected ourselves and each other but fear is what kept us hungry. Fear is what kept us climbing the ranks. The more established gangs thought our numbers were too small to evoke fear. They didn’t know shit. They thought we were only comprised of the four kings.

Fuck ‘em.

They’d learn to cower in front of us soon enough.

You know how the saying goes…

We are Legion, and we are many.

“We have three minutes to hit the bank,” I said, examining my gun. “Most of the tellers are old, except for the girl I told you about.” My mind flashed back to Jupiter, the teller with the attitude and smart-ass mouth.

“I saw her when I went in there the other day,” Sumo mentioned. He was my right-hand man. He was the first friend I had after I got settled into the group home. We went everywhere together. We ate together, even though his big ass ate more, and we watched each other’s back, and we made sure nobody fucked with us. “She’s a bitch,” Sumo said.

“She is. Hopefully, she doesn’t work today. We can get in and get out.”

“Damn, King. You scared of her little ass?” Sumo chuckled. Truck and Pretty Boy laughed in the backseat of the car. I turned to look at them and aimed my gun at nobody in particular.

“All y’all niggas can shut up. I’m not scared of a goddamn girl.” I frowned.

“Yeah okay. We’ll see how fast we get in and out if she’s at work,” Pretty Boy teased.

“We’ll see how fast you get out of this car after I smack you in your fucking mouth,” I countered.

“Whatever, King. Fuck you. Let’s do this shit,” he sighed.

After we robbed Express One Financial, we were going to make sure all the Kings got their equal share. Within the next month, the other members would hit other small banks and further split the money. It would be one of the biggest hits we ever made. The Legion of Kings stood to make over one million dollars by the time all the coordinated hits were made.

Were we worried about getting caught?

Nah.

You didn’t belong to the Legion of Kings and cry about the fucking police. Well, we called law enforcement the twelve. The years of calling them po-po and 5-0 were over. That’s what our OG’s called them. They were hip to that shit so we carved out something new.

Whenever the police used code 10-12, it meant they couldn’t talk openly because outsiders were around. Well shit, we used their code against them. So any time someone shouted twelve was around, we knew exactly what they meant and everyone knew to shut the fuck up.

So nah, we weren’t scared of them but I knew they posed a threat, so I planned to cut the security guards in on the money from the bank hits so they could help us side-step twelve. I had plans to ease some cops onto our payroll but first, I needed to secure enough money to lure them in. The string of bank robberies would do that for the Kings.

CHAPTER TWO

Another boring-ass day at work had my eyes heavy and my brain racing. All I could think about was going shopping after I got off. I wanted to go to Rodeo Drive and let all my stress go in the Louboutin store…and Louis Vuitton, maybe Prada too. I had several debit cards burning a hole in my wallet. I planned to swipe them into the ground.
