“What do you want, King?” I still saw something swimming in his eyes. Something was on his mind.

“To talk. For real.” I saw the sincerity in his eyes and it drew me in. I understood loyalty and I knew that’s what he was looking for. Even if he did go about it the wrong way.

“Wait a damn minute,” I sighed reluctantly. I went back into the restaurant and found Jay and Shaheed finishing up their meal.

“Juju, what the hell is going on? You left Jamil?” A light frown bent Jay’s glossy lips.

“Girl, fuck him,” I said waving my hand. “I have to go. The one-night stand is outside and…”

“Now? Oh my god. Did he stalk you?” Her pretty eyes turned to slits like she was ready to fuck King up if need be. I loved my sister so damn much. She was a sweetheart but when it came to me, I knew she’d lose all her decorum.

“Something like that.” I had no idea how King always knew where to find me but…I liked it.

“And you’re smiling about this,” Jay asked, folding her arms.

“I’ll talk to you about it later. I gotta go.” I waved at her then bounced to the front doors.

“Good luck girl. He’s fine,” the server who worked my table said as I rushed out of the door.

I climbed into King’s car and instantly felt like I knew him better. The all-black charger was decked out with supple red leather inside. King had an expensive sound system too. Not that I would expect anything else.

Everything was immaculate. The leather dashboard put off a subtle sheen that told me his car was constantly detailed and taken care of. I took a deep breath letting the smell of leather and something clean, like orange oil, fill my nostrils.

“Had to go tell your date you found a real man to talk to?” King asked, smirking as he gripped the leather steering wheel and pulled out of the parking lot. I noticed a short angry gash on the back of his hand circled by a deep purple bruise flowering on his knuckles.

He’d been in a fight.

I wondered if he killed anyone. The thought made me come alive with a heartbeat between my legs driving all my thoughts south.

“I told him I had a jackass to talk to. He understood because he’s one too.” I shrugged and King laughed but it was a cold sound. Not the self-assured one I was getting accustomed to.

“So I take it your lil date didn’t go well?” He turned a corner then came to a stop at a red light.

“I was only there for my sister. She wanted to date the guy’s brother.”

“Your sister? Is that who you live with?”

“Yeah. I thought you knew everything.” I pursed my lips together and watched him.

“I haven’t had a chance to dig into your family yet,” he answered, pulling off when the light turned green.

“Are we going to Baldwin Park?” I asked him, paying attention to the scenery.

“Yeah. I needed to talk to you away from my boys.”

“Why?” I prodded.

“Because I can’t seem like I’m bringing someone under observation into four kings’ business.” He spoke like I should have already known the inner workings of their gang.

When he parked, he looked at me. I returned the favor. Shit, he was easy on the eyes anyway. I could stare at his strong features and chestnut eyes all day.

“Walk with me.” He didn’t wait for me to answer or protest. He got out and stood there.

“You’re not going to open my door?” I asked.

“Hell no. Maybe if I was fucking you, I would.” Hearing him mention the word fuck made my pussy throb. “You’re a prospective king. Open your own fucking door.” The arrogant tilt of his head made me want to punch him in the mouth.

I got out with way more aggression than necessary and slammed his door. “Watch how hard you close my door, Ju.” He couldn’t see me mocking him because he was ahead of me already.
