“Good that means I’m in no danger.” I moved the gun away from my body and glared at him.

“You have no idea how much danger you’re in. I haven’t shot you yet because you’re entertaining but you need to watch your fucking mouth. I’m a bad man, baby.” He backed out of the vault, still training his gun on me.

“Your masks are fucking stupid,” I called out before he left. He paused at the doorway and tipped his head to the side.

“What did you just say?”

“You heard me.” I walked past him out of the vault and looked at Mrs. Coventry over to make sure masked man number two hadn’t hit her.

“Let’s go!” Masked men, three and four called out, heading toward the door. Masked man number one was pissed though. I got under his skin.

Good.

He damn sure got under mine.

“So you just not scared, huh?” Masked man number one grumbled in a low voice that made something inside me clench.

“Of you? No. Fuck you.”

“The feeling is mutual, baby. Have a good day.” That time, his voice registered and recognition crossed my face.

“You have a good day too…sir.” He was on his way out when he heard the inflection in my voice. He paused for a split second and looked at me over his shoulder. He knew I knew.

It was the same guy who came into the bank pretending like he wanted to open an account but leaving before I could get the paperwork. I knew he was full of shit and that he was up to something. He was planning a robbery and by the looks of it, he was the leader.

Once they were gone, I had to comfort a sobbing Mrs. Coventry and call the police. I thought long and hard about if I wanted to snitch on the men in the stupid masks.

See, I wasn’t an ordinary, squeaky clean bank teller in Inglewood. It was a good front but I was just as bad as the men who robbed Express Financial. I only took the job there because I’d already cased it and noticed the number of rich customers in and out of there. It was the perfect way to steal identities and embezzle funds to fuel my shopping habit.

I had the perfect little hustle going. For months I’d been bleeding customers little by little and nobody had caught on. Then here come these obnoxious assholes, strongarming the bank and taking money while drawing attention to themselves.

News about the robbery was all over social media and TV. Everyone was linking the hit to a gang I’d been hearing way too much about, Legion of Kings. Now the lion masks made sense. They were still stupid looking but they made sense.

I stared at the screen in the police station and listened to them go on and on about the Kings and how nobody had been able to identify them. I snickered to myself because how ironic was it thatIwas the only one who could successfully identify the ring leader of one of the most violent up-and-coming gangs in Inglewood? Especially since I was doing the same thing they were.

I was better at it of course but…still. Honor amongst thieves and all that bullshit. Besides, since I knew what the guy looked like, I could find him again and possibly extort hundreds of thousands from him. He got away with easily half a million today from the vault if not more.

“So, Miss Gray, did you notice anything distinguishing about the four men who robbed the bank today?” I looked into the eyes of a detective I didn’t recognize. I knew most of the men at the precinct but not him.

“No, I didn’t,” I said, maintaining eye contact so I seemed trustworthy. “Can I please speak to Captain Marsh? I was told by one of the officers that I’d be able to speak with him. I’ve been here for hours and I keep answering these questions when this is all very triggering.” I made my eyes glossy with tears on cue and the cop pushed out a sigh. I knew I had him when he dropped his shoulders and nodded.

“I’ll take you to his office,” he conceded.

We walked across the wide-open area that housed at least a dozen desks. I eyed everyone on my way to the frosted glass door with Captain Marsh’s name printed on it in black vinyl letters. The officer knocked a few times and when Marsh told him to enter, he opened the door and presented me like some kind of offering.

“She insisted on seeing you, sir,” he said, nodding his head at the captain like he was royalty. I stifled an out-loud eye roll.

“She’s the bank robbery witness?” He quizzed, looking me over briefly.

“Yes, sir,” said the officer. He was itching to back out of Marsh’s office. I could feel his apprehension. I personally didn’t know what was so bad about the captain.

“Thank you. I’ll speak with her.” Marsh motioned for the officer to leave and close the door and he couldn’t have been happier to oblige.

Once I was alone with the police captain, I made myself comfortable in the chair across from his tidy desk. He looked at me and dropped his broad shoulders with a heavy exhale. “Jupiter, did you see anything at the bank?”

“Nope. Also, what the fuck is with acting like you didn’t know me? Almost everyone up in here knows you know me,” I said, folding my arms.

“He’s new. He’ll figure it out. Especially since you can’t seem to stay the hell out of the precinct.”
