“Yo, Juju…you gotta watch your mouth before it gets you fucked. I’m trying to kick the habit,” he said.

“Trying to kick the habit?” I laughed, tossing my head back. “We only fucked once.”

“We fucked three times in one night. One fun, freaky-ass night.” I couldn’t disagree with him. Shit, even as we headed down the hill, which, he carried me back down, by the way, I wanted to fuck him.

It was purely physical.

CHAPTER NINE

“Where are we going? I planned to go shopping today and…”

“Shopping with stolen money from your job?” I asked Jupiter. She looked at me from the passenger seat of my Charger, and I laughed a little at her expression.

“Yes, motherfucker,” she snapped.

“I’m taking you to my place,” I told her.

“Why?” She asked, looking at herself in the mirror. She was beautiful. She didn’t need to fix a thing.

“Because we’re going on a mission.”

“Mission?” She blurted, slamming the mirror shut and glaring at me with cat-like eyes. “I’m not officially in the gang yet. Why are we doing anything remotely resembling a mission?”

“Because I said we are.” I turned onto Crenshaw and ignored the shouts and horn beeps from people who recognized my car.

“Damn, King, are you a fucking celebrity on Crenshaw?”

“Of course,” I scoffed. “I make sure my hood is straight.”

“After you rob them blind?”

“Let me rephrase,” I smiled. “I make sure the kids are straight. The Kings have to get their money how they get it. The goal is to be rich so one day my kids don’t have to go through this.”

“You want kids?” She marveled.

“One day. You don’t?”

“I try not to think about it. Having kids scares the fuck out of me.” Jupiter shuddered like kids were a horror story.

“Why?” I wondered out loud.

“Because what if something happens to me and they get put in the system like I was? I can’t put my kid through that. What if I fuck around and get locked up and they’re out here vulnerable?” Only someone practically born into the system would have such potent fears.

“How old were you when you got to Ocean View?”

“Two. I don’t remember it but that’s what my paperwork said.” Her voice was sad and it pressed a weight down on my chest.

“I got there at three,” I confessed, pulling into the parking lot. I killed the engine and looked at her. She was so damn pretty it pissed me off and I didn’t know why. Her thick lashes and full lips made it hard to concentrate.

“Damn. You never got adopted?” She asked quietly.

“Never. Wasn’t good enough I guess.” I shrugged then got out of the car. I hated thinking about all the reasons why I didn’t get chosen. Why nobody wanted me in their family.

“You were,” Jupiter said after she got out. I got so caught up in the way that damn dress rode her toned curves, I forgot what the hell we were talking about.

Why was she wearing that?
