Jade, focus. Sara’s housing crisis.

Jade

Yes, right, sorry.

Sara

I can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m taking Chris up on it.

Emma

Are you sure? I know odds are tiny that he would hurt you, but still. Is it worth the risk? You could just come here.

Jade’s brushing her teeth right now, but she says there’s room, and she’d love to have you.

But she’s also asking if Chris is as cute in person as in the pictures.

WHICH IS NOT A FACTOR.

Tessa

It’s going to be fine. Just keep us up to date.

Emma

If anything feels off, dial 112 first.

Sara

Did you just look up the 911 equivalent for Germany?

Emma

Well, I wasn’t sure if it was the same in every European country.

A dot of white flutters past my eye. I glance up to see that the ceiling is flaking with every beat of the bass. I scrub my hands over my face and navigate to Chris’s contact info.

Staying with a stranger has got to be better than this.

Offeringa random woman a place to live certainly is unusual, but with my bandmates' voices echoing in my head, it seemed like the right thing to do.

Just this morning, I’d talked to Ram, complaining about writer’s block. Actually, I hadn’t complained about writer’s block, per se; I’d complained about everything but writer’s block.

My place was too quiet.

The summer had been too short.

Really fucking inane shit.

But of course, Ram had asked how the writing was coming along, and I had avoided the fact that I hadn’t written anything. The words weren’t there; the music wasn’t there.

Going stir-crazy, I ventured out of my house to find something different from the quiet emptiness of the mansion. Then I had stumbled upon a gorgeous American woman, clearly just trying to pull herself together.
