“Well, your instincts are sometimes on the level of terrifying. That other topic that you wanted more details about is connected to your mission. Seems the job he is on is one sponsored by the Coyote Clan. But I need to look into it some more because some of the facts just don’t add up.”

“Oh? What facts?”

“The hit started with the girl witnessing a wolf on human murder at a local bar. The story is that she intends to expose werewolves to the media and needs to be eliminated to protect their existence. I checked with the police reports, but they are still looking for the girl. She’s listed as a person of interest. She’s in the wind. But from what I can tell, she didn’t make any threats at all. And if she did, why couldn’t they just take her out themselves? Clearly, they have people willing to commit violence. Why would they bring in the other killer? It’s almost like he mattered more than the girl.”

“That is interesting. And very good details.” There had been more questions than answers in the bulk of that intel, but it had still been helpful. He was starting to pull the different threads together.

“What else do you need?”

“I’m not sure yet. I think you gave me an excuse to turn the side job into a priority. They should be a point of entry for dealing with the bigger problem.”

"Be careful."

"You know me."

"I do, which is why I’m telling you to be careful. I’m worried about the one the clan alpha has taken up with. Don't underestimate that man just because he's human."

"Thanks, Tweety Bird." Then he snapped the phone closed.

He really did appreciate her. She was great at tracking down information using her high-tech gadgets and always willing to share that information above and beyond the assigned job. She'd even helped him fill in a little information about Zeven before he'd made the trip down here. And better yet, she hadn't asked any questions when he'd said to keep it quiet from Quinn. He couldn't be positive that she had actually kept it secret, but at least she hadn't jumped on him with any questions that he didn't even have answers to yet.

Chapter Twenty

Zeven pulled her tighter into his arms. “It’s fucking creepy how you can talk about your death so calmly.” If she kept talking like that, he might really decide to change careers. “Do you want to be killed in a fiery crash out in the streets or do you have another idea?”

“Whatever you think will be more convincing is fine with me.”

His lips brushed her temple. Having her in his arms felt damn good, perfect. “By now they doubt me. All they know is my reputation but even that will not keep them from being suspicious after all the delays. I’m afraid the only way they will believe you’re dead at this point will be to see your body in person or to give them a reason to believe my lies. The loss of my Charger might do that.”

Her fingers petted his chest in sexy little circles. “Would they think it was that important to you?”

“It is that important to me. It is the only car I’ve ever had. I bought it because you said it was your favorite. My Charger has become part of my image, even if they don’t know why I chose it originally.” There had been times when he’d thought he’d never find Harley and at those times the Charger had become his only tangible connection to her.

“Oh Zeven, I can’t ask you to blow up something that means that much to you.”

“You both mean a lot to me. If losing the Charger will keep you safe, then it’s an easy choice.” He tightened his arms. “Which is why I have to kill you, Harley.”

She choked.

His laugh was unexpected and rolled through him like an avalanche. He’d never had the urge to tease anyone before. “You should have seen the look on your face.” Then his breath caught and smothered the lingering humor. “Though… I suppose it isn’t much of a compliment to me or my ability to care for you. I thought you knew I’d never hurt you.”

“I know but…dammit Zeven. Your straight man face is just no joke. It caught me by surprise.”

He leaned back and dragged her into the V of his thighs. Why had he tried to tease her? Was it just to make her smile? That thought was more than a little tempting. But considering his lack of experience with joking around, it seemed he needed more practice if he wanted to be able to pull it off. “I’m sorry, Harley. It was only a joke. I’d never hurt you.”

“Ha, even your jokes are killer…” She cleared her throat. “Now about killing me…How do you plan on making it look real?”

He sighed, glad that she wasn’t upset but disappointed that he hadn’t even been able to make her smile. “I’ll get the body from your house and put it in the Charger. Then I’ll wreck the car while you chase me on the bike. We’ll do some adjusting to make it look like you ran, and I was chasing you when the crash happens.”

“And how will you avoid being blown up?”

“I’ll jump out at the last moment. It should work. Then I can take the evidence back to the client and we can get out of this town.”

“Get out of town…” She sank down onto the edge of the bed. “Oh Zeven, I know I’m being silly. Obviously, I have to leave the hospital. I knew it even before they threatened me. Why does it still bother me?”

To him it was a simple decision but to her it must be quite a bit harder to accept. Seeing her regret tore him up inside. If only he could keep her safe and let her do as she pleased.

“You know, I moved plenty in the beginning when I was sure that I was still being hunted. You could say, I became an expert in not putting down roots. Maybe this time bothers me so much exactly because I thought I’d finally be able to settle down here.”
