Chapter 1

Acoolbreezeflutteredthrough my hair as we strolled along the beach as the once scorching sun set in the fading evening sky. Painting the sky in a vibrant pink and orange, the world looked like a magnificent painting created masterfully just for us.

Our hands were intertwined as our feet walked along the soft and. Water lapped at our feet, making tiny splashes as we moved along the shore.

Turning, I looked at Anson and loved how the soft glow of the sunlight made him almost glimmer in front of me. Looking at him took my breath away and made my heart flutter in my chest.

“I love spending time with you,” Anson said, squeezing my hand tightly.

Admiration for this boy in front of me shot through me, and just as I went to open my mouth to speak, the world around me shifted.

The once serene landscape became distorted as an eerie darkness spread across the horizon as sinister clouds faded out the last bit of sunlight. An unnatural energy filled the air and a deafening roar echoed in my ears.

Suddenly, a gust of wind suddenly whipped across the sand, causing a tiny tornado of sand and debris—– momentarily blinding me. Gasping, our hands released as I struggled to fight through the debris. Reaching out, I struggled to find Anson, but he was pulled away from me violently like a rag doll. In an instant, a raging storm swept in, with thunder crashing and lightning bolts tearing through the sky. I was paralyzed with fear as I watched Mother Nature unleash her fury over us. The rain fell like knives, biting into my skin as I shivered in fear beneath the deafening thunder that shook the earth, causing my legs to tremble.

“Farrah, help me,” Anson yelled, but his voice sounded so far away.

My breathing became erratic, and an overwhelming fear shot through me like a lightning bolt. My eyes moved quickly over the beach, searching for some idea of where Anson went, or honestly, where I was.

“You can’t help him. They want you,” a voice rang out from above.

My body froze, and I had no idea what to do next. I try to move, but it’s as if an invisible force has tied me to my spot.

This has to be a dream.

Why can’t I wake up?

My body fights against the hold that has taken me over, my limbs trembling with effort. The air is thick and oppressive, pressing on me like a dark cloud. The wind howls in my ears, sending electric shocks through my body, as an inner voice comes alive within me, demanding control. I am unable to resist as my eyes move independently, searching for something unseen. The pitch dark sea surrounds me; endless and menacing. Just moments ago, I was reveling in the sweet scent of the beach air and sunshine, but now all I smell is the stench of seaweed mixed with salt and rotting fish. It’s as if the world is dead — everything in it, decaying all around me.

Every inch of me feels heavy and burdened; it's as if I've sunk into a bottomless pit. A strange presence has taken hold of me, engulfing me in a smothering embrace. I am no longer in control of my own body; instead feeling pulled by some alien force.

Inside my mind, I see myself, standing before a woman with long, black flowing hair. It’s an out-of-body experience of sorts, and all its doing is causing more terror to consume me.

“Farrah, they are coming for you. You have unlocked something,” the woman says.

I watch as my body stands, nodding in understanding.

An inner conflict tore me as I wanted to scream at myself to ask who was coming. To ask who this strange woman was and why this was all happening.

Like a violent shake, my mind cleared, and my vision returned just in time for me to watch Anson disappear right in front of me.

Just like that, in a blink of an eye, I was alone. The light that had once illuminated the world around me, now vanished and darkness took over the sky, blanketing everything around me, swallowing everything. In a flurry of confusion, I watched him disappear in the abyss, but I didn’t comprehend what was happening.

How could I?

Stumbling forward, I groped my way through the night, desperate to find Anson. The waves of the ocean thundered against the shore and the once soft melody was now a terrifying tune.

“Anson,” I cried out, my own voice sounding foreign.

It was no use.

He was gone and so was the strange woman.

“Help,” I rang out, but still knowing it was of no use.

Without warning, the wind that had taken Anson, now shook me to my very core. Just as I went to scream out again, I woke up sweating and in a desperate panic.

Heartbroken, I realized it had all been a dream.
