“Do we need any more introductions, or can we get on with this?” Detective Jameson asked, clearly annoyed with all of us. Unlike me, he didn’t seem fascinated by the transformations that had just taken place.

Headmaster Patricia pursed her lips, but only smiled. “We are ready to begin,” she said, but the malice in her tone made even the detectives cower a little.

“Once the Headmaster called us about the murder, we knew that we had a serial Supernatural killer on our hands. We have brought evidence from our last few murders that we think can provide some insight. Along with the team you have brought here, we can hopefully stop anything else from occurring,” Detective Sparks explained.

I began looking at the evidence in front of me. As a Seer, I should be able to gain insight about the places or people they are showing me, but I have no idea what they want from me exactly.

“What do you need me for if you have this team and detectives?” I asked.

“You are a badass, that’s why they need you,” Anson spoke up, and I couldn’t help but giggle a little.

“Well, that may be true, but we need Farrah to help us. Her abilities should help provide a vision of what happened.” Detective Sparks pushed a photo toward me and I almost cried out in disgust from the horrific scene portrayed in the image. “You see, your presence has opened Pandora's Box in the Supernatural World. All of the rogue, evil members of our community are coming for your powers. Right now, we believe that they are killing innocent humans to gain strength from their souls. Then, they will come for you, Farrah,” she finished, narrowing her eyes at me and then glancing back to the photo in front of me.

I ran my finger down the picture of a narrow, marshy creek, where the body of a young girl lay face down. Her dark hair was covered in mud and her face was in the water, but it was clear she was dead.

“You have this team of dangerous Supernaturals, why do you need my help? If anything, it seems like I need protection, too,” I cried out.

Nodding her head, Detective Sparks seemed to sense my unease, and she began to show empathy toward me that I desperately wished the others would pick up on.

“Farrah, I know the threat to you is scary, but we believe it is just an attempt from the Dark Magic Witches to steer us away from their real plans. You see, they want your powers, but they also know that you are strong and protected. By going after unsuspecting humans, they are forcing us to search for them. What we need is for you to help us by utilizing your Seer powers and hopefully, stop them before they continue their path of deadly destruction.”

Clenching his hands on the wooden table, Anson grew angry. I heard the wood crack as he dug his sharp nails into the polished surface. “So, you want to use Farrah as bait?” he sneered. “It was one thing to bring in an entirely new team of protectors without even giving me ample warning, but to ask Farrah to risk her life—”

“Let’s not look at it like that,” Luke cut in, but Violet held up her hand and he quickly clamped his mouth shut again.

“Farrah, as far as I see it, you can either cower in the shadows of the academy and watch as more humans are killed, or you can stand up and fight. You’ve done it once before, so why not again?” Violet asked, her eyes glaring daggers at me. My mind was buzzing. So even Anson had no idea about this new team. Which now that I think about it, makes sense. I opened my mouth to speak, but once again, she cut me off. “I did a lot of research on you before coming here. Seers: are a rare type of Fae that is able to predict the future through visions. Similar to Shadowsingers, they are able to sense and experience things just from touch or looking at an image. Along with your Fae magic, you also have the power to punish those that threaten you or others. You can do things that no one else here can. The darkness that you seem so afraid of, could be your ally if you allow it.”

I had no idea what to say. Violet made a great argument, and I had to admit, she made me sound really cool, but the idea of what lay in store for me still plagued me with gripping fear.

Headmaster Patricia stood and paced the room. She stopped behind my chair and I swear, I could feel her powers radiating all around her. “Farrah, the decision is solely up to you. I understand this is a difficult decision, but know that I will support whatever you decide to do,” she explained, her words comforting me.

I glanced around the room at all of the faces waiting and watching me. What was being asked of me was insane. I had fought evil once and somehow lived to see another semester. But now, I was being asked not only to fight against evil, but also try not to get myself killed. To anyone else, this would be a simple decision to make, but I’m not just anyone.

“Sure, I guess we need to get prepared for another battle,” I stated, hoping I sounded confident because honestly, I was anything but confident right now.

Chapter 12

“Idon’tlikethisat all,” Anson muttered next to me.

A spark of electricity buzzed through me while I looked over the crime scene photos. As I looked at the next image, which contained another deceased teenager. This time, though, I felt a movement inside of me. It was subtle, like a phantom limb sensation. The back of my eyes prickled with warmth and wetness as if the girl's pain and fears were flying right into me. I understood then that this connected me to something bigger than myself. As if she were stirring in some secret part of my mind that was suffused with melancholy, and then released like a spring that had been wound too tightly. It surged through my body because I could feel the image coming to life.

Just like I had in that dream before I arrived.

“Hey, is she ok?” I hear someone ask. Maybe it was Violet, but I can’t be sure. All sounds seem to be muffled.

My heart beats so fast that my head pounds like a jackhammer working in the street. Aching in my chest, I fear it may explode. The scent of blood and heavy, humid air fills my nostrils, and tears blur my vision. My ears buzz with loud, piercing screams. I become nauseous, but I can't run or get away from whatever is coming for me out of this image.

I open my mouth to scream just as the girl turns to look at me, but a dark curtain falls over me. The world is muted as I feel myself swaying, falling…

***

“Farrah, can you hear me?” I hear a voice saying, but I am surrounded in a sea of darkness and feelings of unease.

I can hear more voices, but I am no longer in this realm.

No, I am in the photo with the girl, but how can that be? I was just sitting at a table, staring at this inanimate object, and now I am inside this image as though it captured me like prey.

A fire rages behind me, the searing heat of the flames engulfs me, burning my skin and scorching away my sanity. A girl screams to my left, her pleas and cries for help pierce through the air like a sharp dagger leaving me in a daze of confusion. My feet move and I find that I am sinking in a foot of mud as I wade through waist high water in the marsh. I’m out of the city and surrounded by water and trees, just like the Cursed Forest. Everywhere I turn I see flashes of light and destruction, until my eyes lock onto a familiar face stricken with fear and hopelessness. The only thing left is darkness consuming everything in its path.
