“You know I love how much you care, but this isn’t going to help me,” I argued, trying to loosen the straps of the pads. I looked like a linebacker ready to play in the NFL.

“Farrah is right,” Stella added, as she flew all around us in her Dragon form. “She’s not going to have time to put on army gear when the rogues attack. This is ludicrous.”

Before Anson could argue again, Professor Alken and Violet arrived. We were inside the gymnasium and Anson had added an extra layer of padding to the wooden floor. To my left were rows of treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes. To my right were weight benches and mirrors for students to marvel at their strength in. In front of me were mats and pads and the walls were lined with swords and battle gear I had never seen before.

“What is all of this?” Professor Alken asked as Violet snickered next to him.

“Farrah is ready to train,” Anson stated firmly.

Shaking his head, Professor Alken started moving toward me. “This isn’t training. She needs to work on calling her powers and learning to fight. Putting her in a padded bubble will put her at a disadvantage once she’s faced with danger.”

Violet and the professor started taking off the pads as Anson growled and cursed behind them. He clearly didn’t like this, but everyone was right. The last thing I wanted to do was to get hurt, but if I wanted to truly prepare myself, then I needed to face this challenge head on.

Once all of the padding was removed from me and the extra layer of flooring was pushed to the side, we began our session. All of the other students who had decided to stay at the school were in their classes. Lara and Lily had left with their families the night before which had hurt, but I knew it was for the best.

“The first thing we need to do is create an attack on Farrah. We already know the rogues currently have Dark Magic Witches and Vampires, but I am certain they have many other powerful magical creatures on their side. Farrah, you need to first learn how to fight off magic that is thrown your way,” Professor Alken stated.

“Ok, show me how to do that,” I said.

Leo stepped up with his wand stretched out in front of him. “Maybe Anson shouldn’t be here for this,” Leo said nervously. “I mean, I really don’t want him to kill me if I throw magic at Farrah and she gets injured.”

“Absolutely not. I’m staying,” Anson declared, puffing out his chest as he leaned against the wall.

Sighing, I rolled my eyes and motioned for Leo to just get on with it. Reluctantly, Leo began sweeping his wand to the side, and a thin stream of magic flowed toward me.Jumping to the side, I bypassed having the light strike me.

That felt easy enough, but I knew that was just the start. They weren’t going to go easy on me and I guess that was for the best.

Smiling, Leo confirmed my thoughts. “That was just a small taste of what’s about to come. I need you to really think about your magic,” Leo said, lifting his wand again.

Violet approached me, and I saw out of the corner of my eye Anson stiffen. “Calling on your powers during a fight isn’t always easy. Especially, someone like you. Your Seer and Fae powers will want to be at the surface, but you need to learn how to tame them. The Witch magic is what you need to rely on right now. That will be how you call your magic. Once your magic arrives, then your other powers will slowly rise and be of use,” Violet explained.

Listening intently, I wanted to soak in everything they told me. I knew that when the time came, the rogue Supernaturals would pull out every trick they could find to kill me. I had to be ready and that meant I had to learn as much as I could.

“As you battle, I will do my best to try and calm your emotions if I sense they are getting too strong. You have to be level headed. Headmaster Patricia and I have been working on this and I feel confident that I will be able to help,” Candi said with a reassuring smile.

It was incredible how all of my friends were rallying around me right now.

“Ready to continue?” Leo asked me.

“Yes, let’s do this,” I said, trying to sound brave, even though I was nervous.

Within seconds, Leo threw a series of spells and magic toward me. The flashes of light from his wand were bright and harsh, like sunlight reflected off of water. For a second, I was blinded by the intense light, but I had to continue fighting. I jumped from side-to-side, willing my magic to appear. Tendrils of hazy smoke rose up around me as I moved.

You can do this. You can do this.I repeated it over and over in my mind.

Suddenly, I felt a rush of wind as a strong force knocked me to the ground. My body hit the hardwood floor with a thud and all the air in my lungs seemed to disappear. Pain radiated all throughout my body as I struggled to comprehend what had just happened.

Leaning over me, Violet extended a hand to help me up. “You have to be aware of your surroundings,” she said, shaking her head as she helped me off the ground.

Anson was at my side in an instant and I saw the death glare he was giving to someone behind me. Slowly, I turned to see Jax standing with a wide grin.

“What was that?” I asked, still trying to catch my breath. My lungs burned and my headache.

“Magic and spells won’t be the only dangers being thrown at you,” Jax instructed. “Unfortunately, I have experience with Shadow Demons. They are tricky and dangerous as they can move swiftly while also catching their prey with their slimy tentacles,” he said, shuddering at the thought. “Once a Shadow Demon has their sights set on you, it becomes vital that you know what you are doing, or you will face death immediately.”

He had a point, but a little warning would have been nice before he attacked me. I knew that I needed to listen to what Jax was saying. As a Reaper, he had faced various types of demons in the underworld that others of us on Earth had yet to face.

“This is Farrah’s first session. Can’t we go a little easy on her?” Anson asked the group.
