“You’re not fighting them, so somebody has to.”

He shrugged it off. “Like I said, it is what it is.”

“I hate it when you blow me off.”

“I hate it that you still let this get to you when it shouldn’t.”

“So what, then? For the rest of my life, I’m just supposed to accept the fact that he thinks you’re not good enough to be in mine?”

“It won’t always be life this.”

“How do you know?”

“I just do. You’re just his baby girl, Livvy. He’s simply doing his job like any good father would.”

“Can you for once not be rational?” I sassed. “You’re a great guy. He should be happy that my best friend is such an amazing person.”

“Well, you remind him often enough.”

“That’s because I’m the only one who cares.”

“I care about you, and that’s all that matters to me.”

“That’s really sad.” I disappointingly nodded. “You should be pissed.”

“And what’s that going to solve, huh?”

“I don’t know, but it’s better than not saying anything.”

“What exactly am I supposed to say? He’s your father. I’m not going to stir the pot when you do that enough for us both.”

“Whatever.” I rolled my eyes.

“He just wants what’s best for you.”

“Stop saying that! You’re just making excuses for him.”

“Livvy—”

Unable to bite my tongue, I confessed, “He wants me to go to Stanford University, Ethan. As in California. As in a five-hour plane ride. As in a forty-hour car ride from here. As in a whole-ass other coast away.”

He jerked back. This was the first time I admitted this to him.

“Now that I got your attention,” I mocked. “Why do you think that is?”

He was silent for a minute. It was obvious he was trying to gather his thoughts.

Shaking it off, he insisted, “It’s a top school.”

“Oh, come on!” I reprimanded. “You know it’s because that college is the farthest away from you.”

“Livvy, you don’t know that.”

“Trust me, I do. It doesn’t matter how many scholarships you get. It won’t matter. The tuition for that university is insane, and we both know you can’t afford insane.”

He didn’t reply how I wanted him to. Instead, he asked, “What do you want me to say?”
