“Why not?”
“Because you’re just following me.”
“So what if I am?”
He bowed his head in defeat, and I wanted to crawl into his lap and make it all go away. Exactly how I always did when he was sad.
“You can’t follow me,” he let out. I didn’t want to hug him anymore; now I just wanted to scream at him.
“You can’t tell me what to do!”
He scoffed, “The fuck I can’t.”
I fervently shook my head. “You don’t mean that. I want to be with you, and I know you want me to be there too.”
He shut his eyes like he was trying to make me disappear. I wouldn’t grant him that leniency.
“At least look at me if you’re going to break my heart, Ethan. I deserve at least that, don’t I?”
He shut his eyes tighter, and I didn’t back down.
“I love you, Ethan.”
I didn’t recognize the guy sitting next to me with a bowed head and distant demeanor.
He wasn’t my Ethan.
My boy.
My best friend.
Ethan wouldn’t hurt me. He wouldn’t break my heart and not have the decency to look me in the eyes as he did it. Making me bleed out for him.
“I thought you loved me too.”
“I do.”
“Then what’s the problem? I don’t need my father’s approval on where I go to college and what I do with my future.”
“It isn’t your future, Livvy. It’s mine.”
“Then why did you apply to Stanford, huh? I know it wasn’t because you liked the campus. You did it because you want to be with me too. Just admit it. What did my father say to you that’s making you pull away from me now?”
The hollow feeling built inside me. The emptiness surged from my heart throughout my entire body, causing me to feel like I was broken and truly alone.
Like something was wrong with me.
I had nothing left to say, nothing left for me to do. I don’t know how long we sat there, both of us lost in our thoughts and disillusions when I did the only thing left for me to save the future of our friendship.
I climbed in his lap, straddling his waist…
And kissed him.
