“Alright, but only because you asked so nicely.”

I smiled, thinking I’d won. I couldn’t have been more wrong. All of a sudden, he lifted me up by my waist, tearing my arms off him, and hurled me into the air like I was just a rag doll. I landed in the water, submerged under.

Coming up for air, I hollered, “You asshole!” I swam back toward him, stumbling to my feet once I could stand in knee-deep water. I looked down with my hands out at my sides. “Look!” I demanded. “Look what you did to my pretty white dress! I’m drenched because of you!”

I glared up at him, ready to give him hell as he stood in front of me, but the expression on his face rendered me speechless. His eyes roamed my soaking wet body. Beginning from my hips to my chest and up to my face with a predatory regard.

Our eyes locked, and he reached up, wiping a droplet of water off my cheek. His warm thumb stirred emotions deep inside me, causing my lips to part and my body to shudder.

I remembered the gleam in his eyes from when he kissed me, but as fast as it happened, it was gone.He shook it off, cleared his throat, and looked away from me. He rubbed the back of his neck, and an abrupt uncomfortable silence filled the air between us.

I followed the wake of his stare, peering down at my dress again. Finally realizing why he was taking me in so heatedly. The white flowy cotton clung to my body like a second skin, accentuating my curves and breasts. I wasn’t wearing a bra and you could see-through the fabric, including the outline of my panties.

My nipples were hard with my legs slightly shaking. I swallowed hard, suddenly feeling exposed and vulnerable, but I didn’t move to cover myself up. Reaching for the hem of his black shirt, he pulled it over his head and slid it off.

“Here,” he stated, throwing it at me while still looking away.

I nodded even though he couldn’t see me. After I was done putting it on, I giggled taking in my appearance. He faced me again, smiling at me. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more uncomfortable, I openly gawked at my best friend the same way he just did with me. His body was so tense from what just happened between us, showing off every sleek, toned muscle of his arms, sculpted chest, and carved abs, emphasizing his eight-pack.

His shoes were in the water, soaking the bottom of his jeans. The heaviness of the water dragged them down his slender waist, showing off his V right above his happy trail. Which, that in itself, was doing all sorts of things to me. He followed my open stare down to his exposed body, exactly the way I just did when he was ogling me.

Looking back up to my face, he pursed his lips, trying not to grin. It was my turn to look away from him although I didn’t want to. My cheeks were flushed and my heart raced, rapidly beating hard against my chest and making me feel weak in the knees. His silence only made things more awkward between us.

“It’s not the first time you’re wearing my clothes,” he reminded. “Half your closet is filled with my stolen hoodies.”

I smirked. “You gave those to me.”

He half smiled. “Expecting I’d get them back.”

“You should have made that clear before you let me take them. Your clothes are always comfier than mine. Why do they always make guys clothes so much better than girls? You’d think it’d be the opposite.”

“How many men’s clothes are you wearing, Livvy?”

“Oh, you know… I don’t kiss and tell.”

He arched an eyebrow. “Yeah, well, you don’t look bad wearing my clothes.”

I blushed, not meeting his eyes as he placed his hands in the pockets of his jeans, simply accentuating his strong build.

“How did you know I was down here?” I asked, changing the subject.

He cleared his throat again, rasping in a hoarse tone, “Because I know my girl.”

If he meant that in a possessive way, I didn’t catch on. I was his girl. Always had been, always would be.

“Does that mean you followed me?”

He ignored my question. “Why the sad song, Livvy? Did one of your many guys break your heart today? Because I’ll break their fucking legs.”

I chuckled.

Over the past two years, the attention I received from boys probably changed the most about becoming a woman. I got asked out on a daily basis, but my dad’s rule was that I wasn’t allowed to date until I was seventeen. However, it didn’t matter. I had no interest in any of them or anyone. It was always just Ethan and me, and I loved it that way. I didn’t need the attention of other guys when I had him for that.

Ethan was also not interested in other girls. He never dated anyone or had a girlfriend. Not with us spending most of our time together. It didn’t bother him. Girls were always trying to get him to notice them, but he wasn’t ever affected by it. I think he was used to it at that point. If Ethan wasn’t with me, then he kept his head in the books. You’d think studying was his job with the way he was constantly learning one thing or another.

It was almost like he had something to prove to himself, or maybe it was other people. My father still wasn’t fond of him, and for some reason, it felt as if his disdain got worse as time passed. My mom and Ethan’s uncle implemented a new rule: we weren’t allowed in each other’s rooms overnight. Now, we snuck in through our windows and locked our doors so we didn’t get caught. It had yet to happen because we were very careful. We had too much to lose if we did.

I made my way over to my things by the shoreline and sat down, leaning back on my hands to leave my feet dangling in the water. Ethan followed, sitting beside me.
