Prologue

Funerals are for those left behind. Rituals to remember the deceased as we knew them in life and allow us the opportunity to say goodbye. But in a culture that tends to deny death, funerals make it an ugly reality. They hold a mirror to us, making us look at our own mortality.

Because death will come to us all.

Eventually.

It came to Sir Leonard silent and cunning, depriving him of his own life’s source.

Cold, morbid, and deceptive.

It sucked him dry.

The police determined he had a heart attack. But there were those of us who knew better. Something not of this world got to him. Something that could only be described as a monster.

I scanned the room, my eyes landing on three other men. My brothers in the Circle of Kings. They understood what Sir Leonard’s death meant.

We were now vulnerable.

The Circle of Kings was in danger.

We might be called the lords of luxury, the billionaire kings, monsters in human form, but we were no longer omnipresent and untouchable.

Death had touched us.

My brothers in the secret society continued to deny what made them strong. Deny the very thing that gave them their strength. Refute their very essence. Their solution was to lay low and wait it out. To let the red bloodsucker come to us.

Not me.

I embraced the monster inside me.

I loved the fucking beast.

He made me strong.

Powerful.

Invincible.

He made me exactly who I was - Y Ddraig Goch.

The Red Dragon.

ChapterOne

NAVY

“Ithink I have a storyline,” Sam said, rolling off of me. “About the two missing girls from Milford Haven School.”

I sighed, completely unsatisfied and definitely not ready for small talk. “The girls from Wales?”

He disposed of the condom and put his arm around me for a cuddle, but I pushed him away, sitting up. I never understood the need for post-coital snuggling. It seemed rather needy, but then again, Sam was needy.

“Yes.” Then, seeing me stand up, he asked, concerned, “Aren’t you going to stay?”

“I don’t know. I have an early start tomorrow, and I need to get some things done at my place.” He had given me a key to his flat two weeks ago, hoping I might move in.

Needy.
