“Excuse me,” a young man said, approaching. “Navy, Janet said you wanted to see me. She thought I would find you up here.”

“Sam.”

“I didn’t realize you were back until she told us.”

“Us?” Navy questioned.

“Granger and me,” the young man said concerned. “Is everything all right?”

“Um, yeah. Do you think we could talk?”

“Sure.” He hesitated. “Um, yes. Sure.”

“Mr. Atterbury, my name is Rhys Hughes. I believe we met at your uncle’s funeral.”

Surprised, the boy looked at me for the first time, then back at Navy. “Yes, Mr. Hughes. Oh, are you two together?”

“God no,” Navy blurted out.

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I mean, we’ve shagged, but we’re definitely not together.”

“Oh, I didn’t mean that.” Sam’s face paled. “I meant, were you here on business together.”

“Jesus Christ.” Navy held her hand to her forehead and looked at me. “You stupid idiot.”

“I’m sorry,” Sam said. “I think I should go. Look for what it’s worth. Granger says you’re to return to Wales immediately. There’s another girl gone missing.” He walked off.

“Sam,” Navy called out.

He turned and looked at her. “It hasn’t hit the news channels yet, but it will within the hour. You should hurry.”

She started to go after him, but I stopped her. “Let him go.”

“Why did you say that to him.”

“Because he’s a boy, and you shouldn’t string him along. You’re too much for him.”

She pulled out of my grip. “Sam’s the only friend I have here.”

“You can’t go back to Wales,” I said, raising my voice.

“Look. I have nothing else. If I can’t figure out this story, then I’m finished.”

“You promised.”

“Well, welcome to my world where promises are always fucking broken.”

I watched her walk off.

Damn it.

I never should have slept with her, and I definitely should not have come here. Vortigern purred inside me, satiated for the moment. He was now connected to her and would want her again soon. Dragons mate for life. And now there was the bloody Dearg Due. I was a loner. I wasn’t meant to be someone’s bodyguard or partner. But if the Dearg Due saw us on the rocks, then I really had no other fucking choice.

ChapterSeven

NAVY

Why was it always raining in the UK? The windshield wipers were going at full tilt, and I was only two hours into the five-hour drive to Milford Haven. I couldn’t believe I was going back to the godforsaken place. At this slow rate, it would take me an extra hour, and it would be dark by the time I arrived.
