“He has an alibi,” he confirmed.

“That’s what he said.”

“And you have a boyfriend.” He sounded disappointed.

“Ex-boyfriend.”

“Ahh.” The corner of his mouth crooked up in a half smile. “Perhaps tomorrow we can meet in the evening and exchange information on the case. It’s nice to have someone to talk to that’s not on the force.”

“I’d like that. Thank you for helping me.”

“Stay away from Rhys Hughes.”

“I plan to,” I said. Rhys entered the pub and sat at the bar as if on cue. He was still wearing his designer suit and looked like a shiny penny in a jar full of old coins. I felt his eyes shift to where we sat, and I looked away.

“I need to get back to the station,” he said, standing up.

“Thank you, Morgan.”

“Call me if you need anything. I’ll see you at the press conference.”

“Bye.” I pulled my computer out of my backpack and quickly typed up the article, pulling a picture of Bryn Lloyd off the internet. It wasn’t much, but at least it included information other papers wouldn’t be privy to until tomorrow. I sent it off to Sam and was getting up to leave when Rhys came over to me.

“A one on one with the superintendent. You must have gleaned some good information off of him.”

“Not really,” I said, getting up.

“Where are you staying?”

I shook my head. “I don’t know, in Milford Haven. I haven’t got a room yet.”

“They’ll all be booked.”

“Then I’ll go to Swansea.”

“You can stay with me,” he said.

“You have got to be kidding. And let you lock me in a freezing room. That is the last place I would ever stay.” I exited the bar and went over to my car, opening the door and getting in.

He stood off to the side.

I turned the key, but my car wouldn’t start. I tried again. Still no luck. “Fucking hell.”

“Is everything okay?” Rhys asked me smugly.

“My car won’t start.”

“Would you like me to take a look?” he asked.

“No, I’ll call a mechanic.”

“This isn’t London. The only garage is closed for the night.”

“Come on,” he said. “Come back to my place, and we’ll call the garage in the morning.”

I leaned my forehead on the steering wheel.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.
