“Morgan told me to stay away from you,” she said.

“Probably good advice, but in light of recent events, it comes a bit late.”

“I told you that meant nothing.”

“You also said it wasn’t even good,” I raised my brow in question as I remembered how wet she was and how quickly she responded to my touch.

Her cheeks flushed. “You didn’t need to mention it to Sam.”

“Sam is a fool.”

“He’s going to help me. He’s editing my story and is going to turn it in tonight. It will be published in the morning paper.”

“You don’t love him. You’re just using him.”

“I made a mistake,” she said defensively. “I do love him.”

My eyes narrowed as I studied her, and I wondered what energy I would feel if I touched her.

Sadness.

Hurt.

Whatever it was, she wasn’t defending her love for Sam. She didn’t love him.

I shook my head. Why did I even care? “What made you this way? Someone must have hurt you at some point.”

The pink that tinged her cheeks quickly faded, and her full lips tightened into a hard line.

“Did I hit a nerve?” I asked.

“There was a sign on the door to the pub about the missing bull,” she said, changing the topic.

“I saw it.”

“Are you going to call and tell them what happened?”

“No, and neither are you,” I said firmly.

“Don’t you think they have a right to know?”

“No. I could offer them no explanation. I didn’t take the beast, and I certainly don’t want to be involved.”

“I googled what happened to see if I could find any rationale for what happened. There was a story of a similar case on a ranch in Oregon. Five purebred bulls were found dead and mutilated. The picture of the animals looked like the bull we saw.”

“Interesting,” I said, my attention piqued. “Did the article offer a reason?”

She rolled her eyes. “They said there was no explanation since there were no tracks and not a drop of blood. Though one person suggested it was a UFO.”

“That sounds absurd.” Then again, sharing a body with a dragon was absurd, and so was a bloodsucking woman.

She set her glass down. Mission accomplished, she had successfully taken the heat off of herself. I applauded her in my mind. Smart girl, she would make a good journalist.

“I’m going to change and go lie down,” she said.

“There are towels in the cupboard.”

She got up and disappeared into the bathroom.
