“Right.”

We stood up at the same time, coming face to face with each other. Morgan reached out and caressed my cheek, taking my face in his hands. Our lips touched as we kissed. It was soft and gentle. A desperate plea for understanding. He pulled away. “God. I’m so sorry, Navy. I shouldn’t have done that,” he said.

“It’s okay.”

“No. You’re my friend. I want you to know you can trust me.”

I put my hand on his chest. “Morgan, it’s all right. It was just a kiss, and I do trust you.”

“I should get you back,” he said. He headed to the closet and retrieved my jacket along with an umbrella, handing the jacket to me.

We headed out the door, huddled under the umbrella toward the detached garage. His car was parked outside it on the circular drive. There was a thud in the distance, and headlights briefly blinded us as a car turned and drove off.

“What was that?” I asked.

“Not what, but who?” He laughed.

“You think it was Rhys?”

“I don’t know. I couldn’t make out the car with the rain, but I could guess.”

“I thought you only dealt with facts,” I said, smiling.

“Touché.”

We drove back in silence. The rain poured off the windshield, and the wipers were struggling to keep up. As we pulled up to the caravan, Morgan stopped the car, putting it in park. “I know I’ve said it before, but be careful with Rhys.”

“What evidence do you have on him?” I asked, curious.

“He’s a loner.”

“Last time I checked, that wasn’t a crime.”

“No,” he sighed. “Most of the press has left. You can move to a hotel tomorrow.”

“I know, and hopefully, my car will be fixed.”

He got out and came around to my side, holding the umbrella.

“Thank you for tonight,” I said, as we rushed toward the door. It opened, and Rhys stood in the doorway waiting. The light inside the trailer shadowed his body, making him look large and foreboding. I swallowed, hoping there wouldn’t be a scene.

“Here she is delivered safe and sound as promised,” Morgan ribbed.

Rhys’ eyes narrowed, and as before, it looked as if his pupils elongated for the briefest of moments. Reptilian in nature. Sinister and unscrupulous. “I would thank you, but I don’t think Navy would appreciate it. She’s a girl who thinks for herself. I’m not her keeper.”

“That’s right,” I said, pushing past him. I’m not sure what he was to me.

Nothing.

Everything.

A brief encounter.

It didn’t matter because I knew enough of him to see he was being restrained. Something boiled just below the surface. “Goodnight, Superintendent,” Rhys hissed, shutting the door.

I sat down on the couch. “Were you outside Morgan’s house tonight?” I asked, point blank.

“Of course I was.” He poured himself a whiskey, and from the looks of the bottle, he had drunk most of it.
