“She’ll be with me. I can’t leave her alone. Not now.”
“Very well.” He rang off.
I looked up to see DC Havard coming toward my car.
Fucking Prick.
I lowered the window. “How can I help you, sir,” I said when he got close enough.
“I’ve had reports of a strange man waiting in the school parking lot,” he said. “Parents are concerned.” He ran his finger along his patchy, half-grown in moustache.
“In a black Aston Martin Vanquish? I would stand out like a sore thumb. That would be a bit stupid of me if I were your kidnapper.”
“Move on,” he said, pointing at me with his baton.
“I’m waiting for someone,” I said.
“It better not be the little bitch of a reporter. She’s already been warned to stay away from the school,” he jeered.
My blood began to prickle.
Bastard.
“She’s talking to the counselor.”
He looked toward the front doors and sneered. “The school’s off limits.”
“According to her, she was told the parents and students were off limits. Nothing about the counselor.”
“Well, she was wrong. Move along. I’ll wait for her. Maybe a trip to the station will serve her right.”
I opened the door and stepped out. “Absolutely not.”
“Then I’ll arrest you for obstructing justice.”
“Try it,” I said. My body grew hot as the red dragon sprang to attention.
Havard raised his baton. “Move on, you fucking piece of shit,” he spat.
“No. I’m not going anywhere without her.”
He went to hit me, but I caught the baton before it stuck, wrenching it from his hand and throwing it on the ground.
A low growl came from deep inside me, the sound splitting the air around me, and my vision blurred.
Havard backed up. “What in the hell is wrong with you?” he babbled. “You’re a fucking monster.”
Shit.
“Stay away from me,” he continued, backing away. “Get the hell out of this town, or I’ll make sure you pay.”
My face was on fire, and I reached up, feeling hot scales. I grabbed the amulet, taking a deep breath, trying to center myself.
Fucking Vortigern had just made his first public appearance.
