I locked the door behind him as he asked and went to the bathroom to apply my makeup. A deep purple hickey lined the side of my neck. I ran my hand over it. Well, maybe we had done more than cuddle last night. I covered it with concealer and finished my makeup. There was a knock on the door. Rhys hadn’t been gone long enough to inspect the grounds.

I lifted the curtain on a side window and peeked out. Sam stood at the door.

“Hello,” he called out, continuing to knock. “Is anyone in?”

Fuck.

“Hello,” I said through the door.

“Navy, is that you?” he asked. “Open up. We need to talk.”

Damn it.

“I can’t.”

“What do you mean you can’t?”

“I can’t answer it,” I said.

“What do you want?” Rhys’ voice called out.

“Get away from me,” Sam said, his voice cracking as he backed up.

I opened the door.

“Stay inside, darling,” Rhys said.

“What’s going on? What do you want, Sam?” I asked.

“Richard quit. He’s gone. Apparently, your partner here and his friend threatened him and roughed him up.”

I looked at Rhys, confused. His jaw clenched, and his hands drew into fists. “You need to leave now.”

“Did you hear me?” Sam repeated. “Your boyfriend beat Richard up.”

“Rhys?” I stepped outside. “What happened?”

“Granger was found with one of his employees. Apparently, he was not only sexually assaulting the females but the males, too. It was in his best interest to step down.”

“That’s not true,” Sam yelled.

“I saw it with my own eyes. One of your colleagues was caught wanking him off. Not to mention he plagiarized Navy’s work.”

“I was the one who switched my name with Navy’s, not Richard.”

“You told me Granger did it,” I said, glancing at Sam. His skin glistened with a sheen of sweat.

“It was my idea,” Sam said nervously.

“Was he blackmailing you too for sexual favors?” Rhys asked Sam. “Like he did his other blond-haired boy.”

“Shut up,” Sam spat.

“You were there?” I looked at Rhys. “You went to my work without telling me?”

“Yes. I paid him a visit yesterday.”

“I never asked you to go. You’ve put my job on the line.”
