Lawyers, police, someone serving me papers. I knew they would come eventually. I only hoped I would be out of the country before they descended on me. As long as it wasn’t Rhys. Morgan sent me a text last night warning me to be vigilant. Rhys had been released, but he was not to leave the area. The police were still building their case against him. Morgan offered to get me protection, but I turned him down. I had a flight booked for tomorrow to take me back to the States. Now, I was second-guessing my choice regarding the protection.

I adjusted my skirt and headed toward the reception area. A tall gentleman in a navy suit was standing off to the side.

“Mr. Wilson?” I said softly, clearing my throat.

He looked up. “You must be Navy Bardot. I’m Keir Wilson.” He offered me his hand.

“How can I help you?”

He looked around. “Is there somewhere we can talk?” he asked in a posh English accent with a slight lilt. Neatly combed black hair, steel gray eyes, and the hint of a beard on his jaw told me he was the type of man who demanded respect.

“What is this regarding, sir?”

“A mutual friend.”

Fuck. He had to be a lawyer representing Rhys. “Perhaps it would be more appropriate for you to contact my lawyer.” I didn’t have a solicitor. I could never afford one, but he didn’t need to know that, and hopefully, it would buy me some time.

“No, it’s you I want to speak to,” he said. “There’s no need to lawyer up.”

I looked back at Janet, who had obviously been listening to everything. “Follow me.”

I took him up to the rooftop lounge. It was raining outside, so I found a secluded spot inside and sat down in a chair. He took the other one.

“I’m here about Rhys Hughes.”

I tried not to flinch upon hearing his name. “Okay.”

“I am a very good friend of his and an associate,” he said carefully.

Rhys never denied the fact of a secret society, and a feeling in my gut emerged. This man was more than an associate. “Go on.”

“Rhys told me what happened in the mine.”

“I found one of the missing girl’s backpack.”

“He told me you saw his face.”

I bit my lip, shaking my head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know you’re scared. Anyone in their right mind would be. But you can talk to me.”

“I have nothing to say. I found the backpack, and I turned it over to the police. Done. That’s it.”

“You’ll have our protection.”

“Our?” I questioned.

“Mine, Rhys’, and our other associates.”

Was this his way of telling me there were more ofthem? Whatevertheywere. Monsters, demons, freaks. “I don’t need it. As I said, all I saw was a backpack. And that is for the police to figure out.”

“I take it Rhys never mentioned our connection. Some call it a secret society,” he said, setting his hand on my thigh. “Regardless, your affiliation with us puts you in danger.”

I pushed it off. “The only danger I was in was from Rhys.”

“No, lass. Rhys never posed any danger.”

“I think we are done with this conversation,” I said, standing up.
