“Yes. I’m sure.”

I shut the door behind me and headed down the trail into the valley. The sky was neither dark nor completely lit and cast in shades of deep purple and gray. It was the devil’s hour. The time of night associated with the supernatural and the unexplained.

Our time.

When I got to the mine shaft, I stopped.

“Hello,” I shouted into the trees. “I’m alone and unarmed.”

Nothing stirred.

“I love her,” I said. “Leave her alone, and you can have me. I won’t put up a fight.”

There was a rustle in the trees, and the woman from the restaurant walked into the clearing. “I don’t have her.” She wore a black dress and cape, and a thick mist rose from the ground around her.

The air crackled and chilled around me.

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know. I can’t see. The vision is blurry,” the Dearg Due said, the fog growing around her.

“Who has her?”

“A man. He was here. I heard him. I was feeding, and he must have seen me. He got scared. I could feel the fear seeping off him, and he ran off. I told her to dig deeper.”

“You talked to Navy?” I asked.

“Yes, in London. I knew she was in danger and warned her to look deeper.”

Lightning lit up the icy sky.

“What do you mean look deeper?”

“She’s smart. I knew she would figure it out if she looked deeper,” she repeated.

I shook my head. “You’re talking in riddles.”

“She’s in danger. Someone she trusts will hurt her.”

“I know she is in danger. Help me,” I begged. “You can have me just help her.”

“I can’t help her. You have to.”

Her eyes grew wide, and I looked back. Keir and Harrison flanked me. I motioned with my hand for them to stay back.

“Why are you here?” Keir asked.

Her lip curled up in a sneer. “I’m here to help the girl. You and I will have our day, but it’s not now. Get ready, though it’s coming.”

“Why did you kill Sir Leonard.”

“Revenge.”

She lifted the edge of her cape and turned, disappearing into the haze.

I looked back at Keir and Harry.Someone she trusts has her. Then, it dawned on me as clear as the morning surf.

“We need to go now. The superintendent has her.”
