I clawed at him, but his hand came down on my chest, pinning me in place.

“Get off me.”

A loud thud came from downstairs, and someone called out my name. “Navy.”

Morgan stood up, and it was enough of a distraction for me to act. I kicked him squarely in the balls, and he doubled over as I scooted off the bed. He grabbed my ankle at the last minute. I fell to the floor. He pulled me up and wrapped his arm around my throat, pulling a syringe from his shirt pocket.

Footsteps could be heard, running up the stairs. “Navy.” It was Rhys, and my heart soared. The door flew open as it was kicked in. Morgan pulled the cap off the syringe and held the needle against my neck. “Stay back,” he yelled.

Keir and another man joined Rhys in the doorway. “Let her go, Superintendent,” Rhys said.

“Stay back.” The needle scraped my skin. “Or I’ll kill her.”

“It’s over,” Keir said.

“No, it’s not.” He shoved the needle into my neck and pushed the plunger. I felt myself begin to fade as the drugs hit my bloodstream. He let go of me, and I fell to the floor.

“No,” Rhys yelled, running toward me.

He crouched on the ground and picked me up, holding me to his chest. “I’ve got you. You’re safe,” he cried.

My eyelids felt heavy. “You came,” I said. My words slurred.

“You’re safe, and it’s over.”

My vision began to fade.

“Stay with me, Navy,” Rhys cried. “Stay with, fy merch.”

It was too late. Morgan had won, but it didn’t matter. Rhys came for me, and the last thing I saw was his eyes looking into mine.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

RHYS

“Keir,” I shouted as I covered Navy with my suit jacket. “We need to get out of here.”

“I’m working on it,” he said. After the superintendent plunged the syringe into Navy, he ran into the bathroom and through an adjacent door.

I had asked Keir and Harry to refrain from using their inner demons because I didn’t want to traumatize Navy any further, and I wasn’t sure if we would find the other girls. Things quickly changed, though. “Use whatever means necessary to get the mother fucker.”

I checked Navy’s pulse. It was steady, which was a good sign. “Hang in there, darling. I’ll get you out of here. I promise.” I looked at Harry. “Stay with her.”

The house was a maze with three floors and multiple rooms. Davies ran past the door and down the stairs. I went after him with Keir on my tail. Once downstairs, he ran to a cabinet, threw open the door, and came out with a gun. I looked back at Keir. His face had morphed into a deathly shade of blue, and his eyes glowed red. I called up Vortigern, and the red dragon emerged, ready to fight.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Davies yelled, waving the gun.

Keir held up his hand, and the gun flew from Davies’ hand, falling to the floor.

“Where are the other girls? Keir yelled. His voice reverberated through the house, shaking the pictures on the wall.

“Get the hell away from me.” The superintendent backed up and picked up the gun, firing at me.

The bullet bounced off my chest, no match for my dragon scales.

Davies turned and started to run.

Harry’s high-pitched grunt filled the room. The superintendent fell to his knees, holding his head.
