Rhys put his hand on my foot, giving it a squeeze.

He heard.

“Did you tell your parents about William?” I asked.

He smiled shyly. “Yes, apparently, my mom’s suspected for a while. Dad will come around eventually.”

I nodded.

“I actually came for another reason,” he said, picking up a bag off the ground. I didn’t see him bring it in. It was my backpack. He pulled my computer out of it and handed it to me. I looked at him, confused. “You need to write your story,” he explained.

I shook my head. “I can’t. I told you it’s yours to write.” I handed the computer back to him.

“Navy, you need to write it so it gets told properly. You’re the only one who knows what happened in that house.”

“Told properly?”

Sam looked at Rhys, who shook his head.

“What?” I asked. “What are you keeping from me.”

“There are claims out there which allude to supernatural beings. Monsters. Morgan’s body was found deflated with not an ounce of blood left in it, and his bollocks had been cut off.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re fucking kidding me. The only monster was Davies. There will be DNA evidence of his crimes.”

“Tell your story. If not, others will, and it won’t be the truth.” Sam set the computer on the bed and stood up. He gave me a kiss on the cheek. “We have a new editor. I think you’ll like her.” Rhys walked him out.

I looked at the computer.

I owed it to Anwen, Mary, and Bryn.

They deserved the truth.

Their story deserved to be told.

I pulled the computer back to me and opened it.

Rhys came back in and sat in the chair. “You’re the strongest person I know. If anyone can do this, it’s you.”

“Did you know about this monster theory?” I asked.

“Utter poppycock,” he said, smiling. “There’s no such thing as monsters.”

Two days later,I was called into work. The new editor wanted to see me. I wasn’t sure if it was good news or if I was getting my termination letter. I turned in the story, but I hadn’t heard anything.

I dressed carefully in my best black dress and pulled my hair into a low ponytail. Rhys parked outside The News Building, handing the valet his keys. It was late afternoon, and the sun was already setting. He insisted on coming with me, still in hyper-protective mode. We got in the lift, and he pressed the button for the ninth floor.

We were supposed to leave for Scotland this evening. Rhys told me all about the secret society, the Circle of Kings. They were meeting on an island to welcome a new member. We planned to stay on after the meeting so we could have some much-needed time to ourselves and give me time to heal.

The doors opened, and we got out. I walked up to our secretary. “Hi Janet, I’m here to see the new editor.”

She looked over at Rhys appreciatively. “Where do you keep finding these hunky men, Navy?” she asked. “Really, you should share.”

“The new editor?” I said.

She sighed. “Vella Bridges. She’s waiting for you. You can go on back.”
