“It looks like you’re on my property in the middle of the night and you don’t have any right to be. Get out.”

One of the shadows moves to stand beside Julius and I glare at him. “I don’t know who you guys are, but you don’t belong here, and you need to get out.”

“You said this is your property.”

Julius shrugs negligently. “It soon will be. Either we’ll get back together or if need be, I’ll make sure that something happens to her. She never changed her damn will so if she passes away, it’s all mine anyway.”

My mouth drops open. “You are such a jackass, Julius.”

A smirk lines his mouth and I have to fight the urge to punch him. “Doesn’t matter. It would probably be easier if something just happened to you. Some kind of accident.”

I roll my eyes. “I don’t think you can actually fake an accident. You’re too big an idiot.”

“Not that big an idiot. That seems to be you. You never suspected me at all.”

“Humph!” I snort. “You didn’t fool Jude in the slightest.”

“And yet he left you alone.”

“Not quite.” Jude’s low, harsh growl makes me jump. He stalks in the front door with the sheriff and a deputy. He growls when he sees Julius standing close to me. “Get away from her.”

Before I can move away, Julius grabs my arm and tugs me in front of him, holding a gun to my forehead.

“I don’t think I will. And I think as long as I keep her between us, you won’t do a damn thing.”

The sheriff and deputy back away and nod their heads to the other two shadows. “Come on out of there, fellas. You’re going to have a lot of explaining to do to your employer.”

My forehead crinkles. “What does that mean?”

Jude nods at Julius. “He was making a deal with an oil company for them to buy your mineral rights out from under you.”

Julius nods behind me. “And I would’ve been set for life if you hadn’t gotten in my way. Couldn’t keep your damn nose out of it or did you want your own cut?”

The gun muzzle pushes into my forehead and Jude glares at him. “You have nowhere to run to. If you manage to take her and get out of this building, the sheriff will hunt your sleazy ass down. And if you manage to get away from him, I will find you and kill you.”

Julius laughs but it’s not a comfortable one.

“All I want is to get out of here with no one stopping me.”

“Good luck.” Jude stands with his feet set wide apart, his arms crossed over his chest.

I study the steely look in his green eyes and then I feel Julius shift behind me and for just a second his arm loosens around me. I sink my teeth into his gun hand and bite down hard.

Julius screams and then slams the gun butt into my head, knocking me to the ground.

A feral growl is his only warning because Jude launches himself at my ex and slams into him with a groundbreaking crunch. He takes him to the ground and hammers a fist into his mouth, again and again.

I scramble to get out of the way and the sheriff ducks inside and grabs me, dragging me out of the building.

“Stay here,” he says gruffly, and I nod my head, wincing when I put my hand up and feel something wet trickling down my head.

The two other men are in the squad cars and contained, the deputy keeping an eye on them.

Yelling in the building intensifies and then the sheriff comes out dragging a limp, bloody mess that turns out to be Julius. Jude strides out after her, barely ruffled but his green eyes full of rage.

“I had him.”

“I need him alive. Not dead.”
