“Maybe. That depends on your behavior. But I’ll give you a little intel—you may get in trouble, and I may come down on you, but you will always be forgiven. You will always have a place with me.”

“Damon,” she said as he turned her around.

“Miley,” he sighed as he lowered his head to hers, covering her mouth with his own.

There was a fleeting moment of resistance before she melted against him. Her surrender was all the sweeter by knowing that she had doubts, but that she felt the same pull that he did. He’d kissed her before, but this was different. There was understanding, mutual respect, shared experience, and a growing, almost irresistible magnetism.

There was a sweetness to the kiss he’d never experienced before. And even though the night had held blood and violence, Damon could feel a kind of happiness that had been missing for a long, long time. He dragged his tongue along the seam of her lips, coaxing her to soften and open for him. Her lips parted and he explored her mouth leisurely and seductively. His hands roamed over her body, and he confirmed what his eyes had already told him, Miley was in shape, and there was a seductive musculature under all those soft and tempting curves.

He moved one hand up her spine to the nape of her neck, sinking his fingers in her hair, tightening them into a fist and giving it a slight tug, making her moan, but not in pain. She was pressed close to his body—close enough that he could feel her nipples stiffen as she burrowed into him. His other hand slid down her back to cup her backside, drawing her closer.

He held her close, his cock hard against her belly, as he traced her jawline with his finger. “You should never doubt your abilities, and I won’t, either. It doesn’t mean I won’t worry about you and that my natural dominant and protective streaks won’t rear their ugly heads, but you were amazing earlier—calm, collected, courageous. No one could want more from the head of their security detail or a comrade in arms. You are everything and more than I could want in a woman by my side.”

“Damon.” His name came out as a sigh.

When Miley rubbed herself against him, Damon broke away, setting his hands on her shoulders and pushing back a step. Shaking his head, he said, “There is nothing I’d like more than to take you inside, put you in the middle of that big bed, and spend the rest of the night making love to you.”

“Then we’re in agreement.”

“No, we aren’t. I told you earlier and I meant it. You’re not someone I just want to scene with and then have sex. I want more and so do you, but you’re not willing to recognize what we have and what’s growing.”

“Damon, I’m attracted to you—wildly so. I’m even willing to consider something beyond the op. Something exclusive if you want, but you’re looking for something I don’t have to give you. I work for Cerberus. I like what I do for the most part, and even the parts I don’t like are necessary to keep people safe. I like to think that because of Cerberus the world is a little better place. But you live in Charleston. I live in Chicago.”

“Other people have successful, enduring long-distance relationships. There’s no reason we can’t do it. Better yet, Fitz is always looking for places to expand to. Cerberus could open up a Charleston office. Hell, I’ve even got a lifestyle club he could locate it over, since he seems to like doing that.”

Now, it was Miley who placed her hands on his chest and pushed back. “You’d never settle for what I can give you.”

“You’re right,” he said with a degree of honesty that surprised him. “I don’t want just a D/s contract and nights now and again. I want you with me unless you’re actively working a case and I’m not sure I wouldn’t rather see you move into a more administrative role. You’re special to me, Miley.”

“You’ve known me for a day…”

“I know you better than most, and that’s what scares you.”

“I’m not afraid of you…”

“No. You’d step in front of a bullet or cover a grenade with your body to save others. Dying doesn’t scare you. You’re afraid of what you want. You’re afraid of reaching out to take what you want and being happy with it. You’re so afraid of living that you won’t risk your heart for fear it will all be taken away.” He grasped her firmly by the shoulders. “I’m not going anywhere, Miley. I’m going to be right here next to you. I want you to think about that. I want you to believe that we can be amazing together because I know we can be. I’m going to bed.”

He didn’t kiss her again; he didn’t wait for her. He turned around and headed into the house, praying to whatever powers that control the universe that he hadn’t just given her the excuse she’d need to walk when this was over.

Who was he kidding? If she ran, he’d chase her down. Miley was it for him; Damon knew it, and he was going to make her believe.

CHAPTER12

MILEY

Miley watched his retreating back—his muscled, gorgeous, naked back. He had on sweats, which rarely did anything to enhance a man’s butt, but even the loose-fitting sweatpants did little to hide his magnificent ass. She could well imagine what he would look like in a pair of tight leathers.

She shook her head again, breaking the reverie. There was no future there. None. Damon was wrong—not about what she feared or what she wanted, but she knew it could just never be. He’d even acknowledged the fact that he wouldn’t want her out in the field. She was a highly-trained field operative, one of the best, and he wanted her sitting behind a desk.

The image of him sweeping the contents of his desk to the floor, rucking up her skirt and him preparing to breach her soft, feminine sex with his hard cock flashed before her and she could feel arousal and need wash over her. But she was damned if she was going to beg him to fuck her. Although she had to acknowledge if he got her naked and pinned beneath him or tied up, he could probably make her do just that.

She also wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of taking a cold shower, even though she was in dire need of one if she was going to be comfortable tonight.

Brock appeared from the side. “Jimmy and I decided we’d both stay on patrol until Seth got here and you and Damon were awake. I thought you two would be inside by now.”

“I’m not tired.”

Even in the darkness she could see him grin. His teeth flashed white even in the dim light. “I didn’t think you’d be sleeping.”
