When I get home, I dart through the front door, excitedly calling out, "Mom! Dad!"

I make my way to the living room, only to find Dad on one of his all-important business calls. "Dad! Dad!" I try anyway, but he shoos me away. "Not now honey, Dad has a work–"

"Emergency, I know," I sigh, finishing his sentence for him while trying not to frown. He mouths the wordsMom is upstairsbefore turning his back on me and returning to his phone call.

Undeterred and refusing to allow him to spoil my good mood, I scramble up the stairs, calling out for Mom as I do. I find her in front of her easel, lost to the world. "Mom! Mom! You'll never guess what happened!" I squeal, barely able to contain my excitement.

"You know better than to interrupt an artist when inspiration strikes, darling," says my mother. "There are new toys waiting for you in your room," she mumbles, pointing to the door and not even bothering to look at me.

"That's great, but Mom, listen. I made a friend!" To get her attention, I moved to stand beside her.

"I'll listen to you as soon as I finish for the night." Her paintbrush glides furiously across the canvas as she stares at it with complete focus. "Go on now," Mom insists, ushering me out of her studio and back into the hallway before closing the door in my face.

The moment I step foot inside my house after a long day at school, my attention is instantly drawn to the sight of the small brown envelope that is poking out from my letter box. I waste no time grabbing it. Without stopping, I kick off my school shoes and quickly throw my book bag onto the hook, not even noticing as it falls to the floor. I run into my bedroom, tear open the letter as quickly as possible, and slump onto my bed, ready to read it.

It takes me a few reads to understand his sentences, but I can usually figure it out. His writing is messy, and his spelling isn’t great, but I can usually figure out what he's trying to say. Pulling my favorite writing pad out of my desk drawer, I write one back.

I'm glad you and Gabe had a nice picnic. Me and Nana love going for picnics together. It would be great if all of us could do one together. Nana makes the best food. I am sure Gabe would really enjoy it, too.

School today was okay, but I had boring math. I hate math. And I have to sit next to Amy Stevens. I hate Amy Stevens. She is rude and is always trying to get me in trouble. Today she said I copied her homework, which is all lies. But the teacher still told me off for cheating.

Do you like school? You never talk about school. I like school. Well, apart from math. Math sucks, but I love art.

Miss Foster, my art teacher, said my drawing, and shading are getting really good. She’s chosen it to be on the wall when our school does our parents’ night next week.

I wish you could see it. I think you would like it.

Nana wants me to bring my art book with me, so maybe I can show you when I come next?

Only ten more days and counting until I am back. I have missed you SOOO much.

Love from your best friend Isabella xx

P.S Mom and Dad went on a business trip last Saturday, me and Claire (the lady who looks after me when they're away) had fun with a bead machine. I made you this bracelet. I hope you like it…. I made us both one!

You don't have to wear it if you don't want to or if it is too girly.
