“I’ve no doubt,” he muses as Drew hits the call button for the elevator blindly, frowning to himself. He doesn’t look his usual self. It’s weird. I look at Sam. He’s a bit off too.

We all get in when the doors open, and I punch in the code. “You know,” Sam says. “I don’t think I’ll have that beer after all.” He steps out, leaving me and Drew in the elevator.

I’m done with this. I look between them but settle my stare on Drew. “Why the fuck did you have to go and put your dick in Kate?”

“Me?” he blurts, his hand indicating to his chest. Then he settles his stare on Sam. “Because he said it was cool.”

“Me?” Sam asks, laughing. “When did the word,I’m cool with you putting your dick in Katecome out of my mouth?”

“When youdidn’toppose my offer to join me at The Manor.”

“Youinstigated it?” I look at Drew like he’s stupid, because he obviously fucking is, stopping the doors from closing.

“I was trying to help,” Drew says, laughing, his voice high-pitched.

“Well, can I suggest you don’t?”

“Absolutely.”

“And can I suggest you don’t put your dick in Kate again?” Sam adds, pretty much kicking the door open when it tries to close again.

“You can.” Drew sighs. “Mate, I honestly thought one of you would stop the whole thing before it got to anyone’s dick being in anyone. Turns out you’re both stubborn fuckers. On the plus side, though, Kate seemed to have fun.”

Sam launches at Drew, and I quickly get between them before blood is shed, holding Sam back while looking at Drew in warning. “May I now suggest you shut the fuck up?”

“You may.” Drew sighs again, putting his life at risk by putting himself in front of Sam, taking his shoulders. “Mate, she clearly has feelings for you and is clearly trying to hide them. I don’t know what else to say.”

“How about we never mention this ever again?”

“Fine.”

“Fine.”

“Fine,” I add, making it a full house offines. “Beer?” I ask, stepping back inside the elevator.

Drew joins me and Sam backs up, thumbing over his shoulder. “I think I’ll go meet up with Kate.”

I frown. “But she’s with Ava.”

“And?” He turns and walks off, and I’m quickly going after him. If he can meet up with Kate, then surely it’s acceptable for me to meet up with Ava.

“What about me?” Drew asks. “I don’t want to meet up with anyone.”

“Not even the person who you weren’t supposed to meet up with last night?” I call back.

“Definitely not,” he grunts. I was right, but his expression right now and his response are clear signs that he’s full of regret. Can’t lie, though, I’m really curious. “Fuck this, I’m going to The Manor. You can drop me back at my place so I can get my car.”

“No problem.” I’ll just pop by to see Ava. Make sure she’s okay. She can’t possibly protest that. Hopefully, with Sam there and Kate welcoming him, I might be invited to stay too.

Doubt it.

Jay’s faceis a picture of warning when I appear outside the bar. “It’s been a quiet night,” he says as I pass. “Let’s keep it that way.”

I ignore him and enter, scanning the bar for them. Sam spots the girls first and moves in, and damn if Kate isn’t delighted to see him. I can’t say with confidence that Ava’s going to feel the same. I stand behind her for a time, building up the courage to make my presence known, bracing myself for the backlash. My time is up when she stands, turning this way.

Staggering.
