“You said he’s a good male,” he replies. “A good male could never satisfy you.”

I don’t know what I expected him to say, but I wasn’t expecting that. I silently sputter.

“Besides,” he adds, leaning in to whisper in my ear. “If you wanted him, you would have had him already, wouldn’t you? Because you’re not a very patient female, and when you want something, you take it.”

“Is that so?” I manage to reply, but the cool tone of my voice feels shaky. His lips are so close to my skin that his breath tickles the shell of my ear. Visions of what his lips have done to my body start replaying in my mind.

“Yes.” His smirk could break me. “But I am a patient male. And I can wait until you decide you wantme.”

He finishes his drink with a toss of his shiny black hair, lusher and smoother than my own has ever been.

“It will be so, so sweet when you do.”

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

NIKO

“There it is.The Primordial Avenger.”

It’s the largest ship docked at Lungfish Station. Captain Rossa asked us to board in the middle of the night, and as soon as it lands, the passenger gangplank is thrown down.

“Up, up, quickly,” a familiar voice hisses from the entryway. “We’d prefer if no one noticed us here.”

It’s Satto, Rossa’s first mate, waving us onto the ship. Raina and I jog up the gangplank. He barely gives us a tap to breathe before the door seals shut behind us.

“Is this a kidnapping?” I joke. “Do you have enemies on this wasteland station?”

“There are enemies everywhere, La’Nira. You should know.” Satto slaps me on the back. “How goes life?”

“This is my mate, Raina Jones.”

“That answers my question,” the male says as he bows his head to greet her politely. “Life must be going well.”

“Nice to meet you,” Raina says. I notice she doesn’t make a point of disagreeing with the label I put on her. She mimics his bow gracefully, even though I never taught her the ways of my people.

As the ship takes off and forks into high gear, Raffa bolts into the passenger reception area to bombard us. Rossa’s brother has sprung up, still lanky in limb but getting tall enough to be mistaken for a fully grown male at first glance. The resemblance between him and his sister is hard to ignore. They always shared the wild curls, hers blue and his black, but now he’s grown into a male version of her. The only other features setting them apart are her breasts and her bad attitude.

“I didn’t rutting believe it! But here you are.” He’s grinning hard enough to break his cheeks.

“Kiki, it’s good to see you,” I say, pulling him into a warm embrace. Having no siblings of my own, I gladly call himkiki—little brother.

Rossa is on her brother’s heels. I make more introductions, and Raina displays a level of cordiality I didn’t know she possessed. Then again, our first meeting didn’t exactly call for polite conversation.

“Does this mean you’re coming to stay with us?” Raffa asks me.

“I’ve come to collect on a favor your sister owes me. I’ll stay for a while, but it won’t be permanent.” I tell him firmly, squeezing the boy’s shoulder affectionately.

“Raffa, catch up time later,” Rossa interrupts our little reunion. “I need to speak with Niko and his mate privately.”

Satto and Raffa leave us with their captain.

Rossa glances at her brother as we exit the entryway and move through the hallways.

“I’m glad you’re not making any promises to Raffa,” she hisses at me. “But what are your intentions? Are you going to visit home?”

Raina is listening curiously. I haven’t told her much about my past, mostly because I’ve been so focused on charming her and keeping her alive.

“No. I was being honest with the kid. I need help with a mission. That’s all. I’ll be on my way afterwards.”
