“That’s alright. I understand. But you didn’t answer the question.”
Now that she’s had time to collect herself, there’s less stuttering and shouting. She’s in control, and that makes me feel I’m at a disadvantage in this conversation.
I grit my teeth and then let out a breath. “I’ll need more information before I make that promise.”
“Why?”
“I’d like to decide for myself whether he deserves to die.”
“I’m telling you he doesn’t,” she says. We’re on the borderline of another argument, but her voice is eerily steady.
“Then why isn’t he here?” I ask, my fingers clenching into a fist. “If he was a good male who committed himself to you, then he would have stopped me from stealing you away. He would be challenging me to the death right now for claiming you.”
“That’s not how things work on my planet. And I don’t owe you an explanation.”
“You want a promise. I want more information. Let’s make a trade.”
“It’s only a fair trade if you agree not to kill him regardless of what I tell you.”
GreatKa, the way she’s lobbying to save this past lover makes me certain Ishouldkill him.
“Not possible.”
She heaves a sigh. “What do you want to know?”
“Has he ever hurt you?”
“Physically? No.”
I assume that means he’s hurt her emotionally. That’s one vote toward his death.
“Did he abandon you? Steal from you? Cause you financial hardship?”
“No… None of those things.”
“Did he commit a crime?”
This one she laughs at. “No.”
“Did he betray you?”
She hesitates. “Yes.”
“How?”
“When we first separated, I moved into my parents’ house, and we were going to therapy. At that time, I hoped we could make things work, but then he cheated. And it was over after that.”
“He cheated,” I repeat. “Cheated you how? Cheated in your therapy somehow? Tricked you?”
She blinks, and her lips quirk up as if to laugh. Then she grows truly astonished when I don’t start to smile or laugh.
“Are you joking?”
“You’ll know if I’m joking,” I growl.
“He was seeing another woman,” she explains. “Humans call it cheating if their mate has sex with another person behind their back.”
I process this. “Death.”
