A glance down reveals that his black-eyed gaze has returned. The connection between that state-of-mind and mating for Kar’Kali makes me think it’s an indication that he’s close to the edge.

“If that’s what you want, then that’s what you deserve,” he utters as he thrusts up into me.

Another cry bursts from me. He’s nearly wedged in to the hilt. I put a hand to my stomach, as if I could feel it from the outside. A ludicrous thought, of course. But I brace my belly as I writhe with uninhibited fervor. He batters my insides, imprinting fresh bruises on my hips as he drives up. The sheer force wipes my mind blank, something like an orgasm and yet not one at all.

“I’m close,” he groans, freeing my hips from his grasp. He’s lucid enough to offer me the chance to get off him, but I won’t, not unless he requests it. I ride him wildly until his jaw goes slack. He releases inside me. I’m so full of him that I feel the subtle shudder of his cock as the hot seed erupts out.

Before I can collapse on his chest, he’s flipping me onto my back.

“If I keep rutting you, it’ll only be a matter of time until I’m hard again,” he says, looming over me. “Do you want that?”

I nod frantically. My loose lips start spilling thoughts I’d usually leave pinging around my mind unsaid.

“I want you to fuck me until I can’t forget the shape of you,” I demand. “So I can memorize this feeling.”

He leans his forehead against mine. We’re both sweaty and breathing hard.

“I can do that for you,” he promises. “In any case, this cock was made for you. It won’t be difficult at all. See how easily we fit?”

That unbearably good fullness returns as his cock hardens once more inside me.

“You take me so well,” he whispers with a squelching wet thrust. “There wasn’t a need to worry.”

“No,” I agree, throwing my head back. My words become mumbles. “No, n-need to worry at al—aahn!”

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

KALLA

I scanthe horizon of EC-12, searching for reasons to deem it unacceptable. It seems simple enough, a rural haven, a terraformed moon where the people of Earth have come to toil in peace on a plot of land purchased via the Alliance. There’s a small town populated by blockish buildings that apparently mimic Earth architecture. Pink waving wheat stands brightly against the blue sky that’s turning dark quickly. The weather is manufactured to be mild. There’s a light breeze that ripples through Kaye’s red hair in a way that makes me shiver.

She shows Raffa and I the downtown area, and the boy looks miserable at the prospect of this mundane lifestyle. He hasn’t said a word of complaint, though, so I suppose he’s decided to accept it. He grew up on his sister’s ship, so the lack of excitement here will be an adjustment. However, it’s no different in that respect fromThe Rightful Heir. At least here, he’ll have space to roam, ways to sweat out the energy, and a new culture to learn.

I dyed my hair black for the occasion of dropping them off. With it tied in a knot on the top of my head, I don’t look much like myself. The townspeople will probably still stare at me in either fright or suspicion, but at least secondhand descriptions of me won’t sound like anything other than the average Kar’Kali. The majority of my people have dark hair and dark features. Kaye assisted me with coloring my brows and lashes, giggling the whole time about “doing my makeup.” To top it all off, I’ve dressed casually, opting for a brown jacket over a fitted tank and utilitarian pants that many civilian mechanics and engineers wear.

“How is it?” I asked her once the transformation was complete. I’ve done such things many times, but never with her.

“You’re still very handsome,” she assured me with a sweet smile. “But I prefer how you usually look.” The way she treats me since we accepted the bond together makes it harder to stomach leaving her alone. I knew that things between us would be different if we could move past my rash decision and the frustrations that followed, but I couldn’t have imagined how it would feel. She looks at me with the brightest light in her amber brown eyes, a happiness I somehow created.

Even now, as we walk through EC-12, she’s showing me the spaces that mean something to her. Every step brings us closer to a painful goodbye, and she wants to share everything of herself with me. It makes me regret every killshot I’ve dealt, and every mission I’ve planned. If only I’d become something else, I wouldn’t have to leave her side.

“We created this thrift shop set-up for exchanging goods that we don’t need anymore. Is that something that aliens do in other places?”

“Of course,” I say, glancing in the window at the treasure trove of both Earth objects and modern agricultural tools like bot parts and soil-testing tools. It’s closed for the evening, otherwise I’d imagine we’d be browsing inside.

“Not to be rude,” Raffa pipes up, “but I’m gonna fall asleep standing up, so can we tour all five of the buildings in town later?”

“Alright, I guess I’ve tortured you enough,” Kaye sighs, clasping my hand in hers. “Let’s rent a skimmer—”

“Kaye?” A human male in an Alliance-standard military jumper freezes at the sight of my mate. At first, I tense, not sure whether this is her ex-mate. But the way she smiles upon seeing him eases me. “I wasn’t expecting to see you!”

The male has dark brown skin, and he wears a strange cap with a beak-shaped brim that hides his forehead. As he embraces my mate, I’m back to being unsettled. Kaye hugs him gladly.

“Hey DJ. It’s been a while,” she says. “Thanks for everything you did to help get my paperwork done when I showed up on Zalede out of the blue.”

“Of course,” he shrugs, eyes darting to take me in. “Glad you’re safe now.” He squints at me but says nothing.

She grabs Raffa and tugs him forward. The boy is the same height as the fully grown human.
