“I’m aware of that,” I say lightly. “I didn’t come here because you threaten what’s between us.”

“Then why are you here?” He crosses his arms over his chest, glowering at me.

Oh, he’s very lucky I made certain promises.

“You’re going to leave EC-12. You have a cycle’s worth of time to do it, or I’ll come back here and visit you again. And you won’t like it if I have to visit you again.”

“Excuse me? Is that a threat?”

I squint. “I’m sorry, was that not clear enough? Should I take out my blade and make it clear?”

“Kaye said she would help us transfer to her friend’s farm. We kept all her stuff, so the place will be back to her in no time. And it’s thanks to us she doesn’t have to worry about getting the crops planted again. So I don’t know why you think that’s necessary—”

“This is her sanctuary. And she was here first. I don’t care that she said that she’d be happy with you moving to Raina’s old farm. This is a small town, and she’ll have to see you and your little replacement all over… gatherings, the market, when she’s driving around. She shouldn’t have to spend one tap of her day thinking about you or your betrayals. This is the place she wants to occupy, and therefore, you should notexisthere.”

“What am I supposed to tell her?”

“I don’t care what you tell her. Tell her the truth for all I care.” In fact, I’d rather he didn’t tell her the truth, because Kaye would be cross with me. But I have a feeling he’s too cowardly to admit I scared him off.

“Is Koko your real name?” he asks flatly. “I looked it up, and it said that it means ‘Big Brother’ in your language… It’s not actually a name.”

Does he think I’m impressed by his ability to type into a search engine?

“No,” I reply. “I don’t use my real name because I kill people for a living.”

His eyes widen with a satisfactory amount of horror.

“D-does Kaye know this? She’s a good person, and she deserves someone who—”

“Someone who what? Someone who doesn’t betray her trust? Make her feel likeless? Someone who wouldn’t replace her?”

“Someone who makes an honest living,” he says through gritted teeth. I guess he thinks of himself as an honorable male. So he must be delusional. That might become a problem if he’s delusional enough to think he stands a chance against me.

“Tell me, is it an honest living to sell the harvest of a land that belongs to her?” I ask him. With one move of my hand, he’s flinching because he expects me to strike him. “What I do is very straightforward. When presented with someone that deserves to die, I deliver that death. But don’t worry, I already promised Kaye that I wouldn’t deliver whatyoudeserve.”

“You’re a piece of work. Get off this land before I call ECPD.”

I pull out myikaniand set it to heat. He’s not cooperating. All I need from him is an indication that he plans on listening to what I’ve said. When I march for him, he backpedals so I snatch the front of his shirt to catch him. The heat of my blade hisses beside his ear. He freezes, shivering with fear under my grip.

“All you had to do was agree. But I guess you’re not very bright. It’s no wonder why you cannot keep a female like my Kaye at your side. Don’t piss yourself, now. I made a promise not to kill you, and I see now that you’re too pathetic to consider a threat.” I let the hot tip of the blade come very close to his temple without touching him. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t make you regret it if you don’t do as I say. So what you’re going to do is pack up all your things, make some excuses for your mate, and go anywhere else in the universe.”

He nods, wriggling to escape me. “Fine, but I—”

“Hush. Now, do you agree that my Kaye should be a very happy female?”

He nods again, glancing at theikaniso close to his head.

“Good. If we both agree that she should be very happy, then you should not be within the same solar system as her. Do you understand?”

“Yes,” he huffs pitifully.

When I let him go, he falls to the ground as he scrabbles to gain control of his body. He’s panting and shaking so badly I almost feel guilty. He might actually piss himself. Did I overdo it? Then again, I recall what Kaye told me about forcing herself to be physical with him to avoid his disappointment. When I remember that, this feels like an abundance of mercy.

“You don’t deserve her,” he grits out as he gathers himself to stand again.

“Perhaps not,” I agree, tucking my blade away. “But she is mine all the same. Her peace is mine to protect, so consider that any time you think to disturb her. One moment of her unhappiness is worth one interval of my recompense. I promise you don’t want to find out what I’ll do to claim it. Trust that I’m very creative when it comes to revenge.”

“Got it,” he says, eyes sparkling with hatred for me.
