Kylok wandered in then. “What happened last night?”

Chapter 7

Eviejumpedatthesound of Kylok’s voice, startled out of the haze of lust that had quickly began building inside of her.

“What did you say?” she asked. Evie couldn’t remember, too focused on the purely carnal look Cazar had just given her before he’d blushed deeply, reminding her of exactly why she’d been so enamored with him when they’d first met.

The look was in such direct contrast to what he’d been doing only minutes before, and it confused her. How did he go from strangling someone for barely touching her to gazing at her in a shyly erotic manner while she yelled at him?

And an even better question; why was she enjoying his behavior?

It probably should have terrified her to see him display his rage and violence so easily. Instead, it had turned her on. But was it Joe or was it Cazar that had acted on that instinct to protect her? Was her sweet scientist hiding a possessive streak like that? Or was it the parasite that couldn’t get enough of being around her?

God, she kind of hoped it was both of them, considering they were a package deal if her and Cazar ever officially mated.

“What happened last night?” Kylok repeated quizzically. “Did you two see each other?”

Evie coughed, heat scorching her face. “Hm? Oh, I forgot to tell you that Alex has a new book she is wanting to read with you when you get home.”

Kylok stilled, his black eyes widening as a dark, rapturous look crossed his face. “She does?”

“Yup,” Evie lied through her teeth. “I heard it was super spicy. Apparently, she thinks you’ll really enjoy chapter three.” And Evie wouldreallyenjoy him leaving.

Immediately.

Kylok barely spared a glance at either of them, tossing a farewell over his shoulder as he disappeared from Cazar’s home.

And that left just the two of them.

Alone.

Evie spun back around to face Cazar, poking him again. “Why have you been avoiding me?”

Cazar stood to his full height at the question, towering over her. She tried to keep from swooning at the height difference, or the fact that his eyes darkened at her touch, but it was almost impossible. Especially when he caught her wrist, tugging her close until her palm was flat on his warm chest and her body was pressed up against him.

“I have not been avoiding you. I’ve been protecting you. There’s a distinct difference.”

Evie rolled her eyes. “Cazar, the only thing you’ve been doing by ignoring me is hurting me. How is that any type of protection?”

“Because I...” His jaw clenched and his fingers tightened a fraction on her wrist as he took a deep, shuddering breath. “Because I can barely control myself when I’m alone, but when you’re near me, I can’t think clearly. I lose what little control I have over myself. There is a roaring in my head that demands I claim you. Mark you. Mate you,” Cazar rumbled darkly, his eyes flickering from gray to black. “And I want to. More than anything. But I’m worried I’ll hurt you.”

Evie shivered, her irritation and hurt dissipating in an instant after his admission. In its place rose a lust she’d been harboring for Cazar since first meeting him.

Cazar wanted her. The words were sweet to hear after so many weeks of turmoil; they drowned out everything else and washed away her own growing insecurities. She wanted to help him with whatever he was facing, and if he was worried about losing control when it came to mating and sex then she should help him, right? Wasn’t that what mates were for?

She knew instinctively that he would never hurt her. But Cazar needed to see that for himself, so that he could master his lack of control. The sooner they conquered his fears of mating with her, the better.

She leaned in, pressing her breasts up against his strong chest as her hand slid down his stomach. His eyes latched onto the swell of her cleavage, which was in perfect view for him thanks to the plunging neckline of her dress. She felt a thrill at the hungry look that spread across his face.

Her fingers roamed over the waistband of his pants, which were hanging low on his hips. Cazar sucked in a shallow breath, his frame trembling.

”Iamyour mate, Cazar. I chose you. I want you. It isn’t fair that you’re suffering alone when I can help you. Will you let me try something, and we’ll see if it works?”

“H-how–” Cazar cleared his throat, his cheeks turning such a deep gray that they were almost black before he continued. “How can you help me?”

Evie probably should have said something romantic, or told him whatever crap she knew about meditation, but Cazar was stressed and dealing with loads of pent-up frustration. And she knew another much more pleasurable way she could help him relax than by practicing breathing exercises.

“I think that if a lack of control toward me is part of your problem then we should work on that.Together.”
