“We smell horrible.”
“I know. Just a few minutes more and I’ll clean you.”
Despite everything that had just happened, Evie couldn’t help the thrill that went through her at the idea.
“You’re going to clean me?” she asked hopefully. Maybe being partially devoured by a monster had its upsides.
Cazar chuckled. “We may be covered in grime, Evadora, but I can scent your desire easily. Perhaps when we set up camp for the evening I can tend toallof your needs.”
Evie blushed, unused to Cazar blatantly flirting with her.
She loved it.
Evie’s grip tightened around his neck, pulling herself up to whisper in his ear. “Maybe when you’re done cleaning me, I can show you how much I appreciate allyourhard work.”
His answering growl was inherently carnal, and her core spasmed from the sound. His arms tightened around her and he picked up the pace until he was almost running through the jungle. Trees and vegetation passed them in a blur of green until the sound of running water filled her ears.
Cazar stopped, setting Evie gently onto her feet.
They were at a river, and without missing a beat, Evie quickly began to remove her ruined clothing, Cazar following suit. She paused right before she dipped a toe toward the water, looking back at Cazar worriedly.
“Nothing in here is going to eat me, is it?”
“The only thing that might eat you in that water will be me,” Cazar said with a small smirk.
Evie cracked a smile. Look at her mate, turning into a shameless flirt. “How do you know it’s safe?”
Cazar tapped the side of his forehead. “It’s begun speaking to me recently. Only in snippets, but it’s clearer than it’s ever been. The water is safe. We’ll protect you.”
If Joe and Cazar said it was safe, she believed them. Evie let out a soft, relieved breath before slowly wading into the river. The water was cool, but not to the point where she felt uncomfortable, so she moved further in until the water was lapping around her breasts.
Cazar stood at the riverbank, quietly watching. His eyes were heavy-lidded, filled with desire despite the fact that they were literally covered in slime, and she couldn’t help but appreciate how intently he stared at her.
“Aren’t you supposed to be cleaning me?” she all but purred.
Cazar moved then, quickly following her into the water until he was at her side. He reached for her, hands finding her hips and digging in tight as he waded closer.
She always forgot how tall her mate was, but as he held her to him, staring down at her like she was made of something precious, she couldn’t help but soak him all in. She’d always thought he was handsome, but over the last few days, his confidence had soared, and damned if it wasn’t the sexiest thing she’d ever seen.
Even after such a harrowing experience, she couldn’t help but want him.
“I should have brought our packs,” Cazar grumbled, completely oblivious to the fact that she was checking him out. “It had our soap and clothing.”
Kylok’s voice appeared from the direction they’d just come from, startling them both. “Yes, you really should have!”
A large rucksack burst through a thicket of bushes, falling to the ground by the river, but Kylok was nowhere in sight. Just how strong was that warrior?
“We’ll be setting up camp around this location, so try not to do anything that I will be forced to listen to,” Kylok called gruffly from through the trees.
Evie’s mouth dropped open in surprise and then she laughed. “Why would he say that?”
“Because the sneaky demon lives to torment me,” Cazar said, already at the river’s edge, collecting the soap he’d mentioned. He grabbed a washcloth as well, dipping it into the water as he waded back to her side.
Cazar lathered the soap in the cloth before he began to gently clean her arm.
“I’m surprised Joe didn’t warn you that Kylok was nearby.” Cazar’s brows rose at her statement, so she continued. “That doesn’t seem like his style, letting another man get close to me, especially when I’m literally naked.”
Cazar nodded, wetting the cloth again and slowly rinsing her arm of the suds and mud.
