They reached the male, barely acknowledging his faint cry of terror before they snatched him up from the floor, opening their jaws wide.

“Evie, help me!” her attacker cried.

The male didn’t get a chance to say another word as they pulled him toward their mouth, snapping their jaws shut over his head. Warmth filled Cazar’s mouth as they tore through flesh and bone, severing the head before dropping the body at their feet and swallowing.

Cazar was filled with the need to rip the corpse apart, ensuring its threat was over for good. At the sharp inhale of breath behind him, though, he paused, whirling back to Evie, who was attempting to stand.

Toroq melted away in an instant, and Cazar rushed to his mate’s side, catching her when her legs gave out, her eyes wide.“Caz? You’re really here?”

“I’m here,” he murmured worriedly, taking stock of her injuries. “We need a healer.” Lifting her into his arms, Cazar ran into the lab, ignoring the broken glass as it crunched under his shoes.

Lay her down, Toroq instructed.

Brow furrowing, Cazar placed Evie on a countertop, knocking away vials and beakers as he rested her down upon its cool surface. Just the other day, he’d taken her for hours on this very surface, and now she was bleeding and in pain on it, her face pale in the lighting.

Remove the knife. Let her drink from you.

“What?”

“What? What’s wrong?” Evie asked frantically, her voice faint as sweat dotted her forehead.

“Toroq wants me to give you my blood,” Cazar said softly, noticing a red mark on her face that was quickly bruising. He cupped her cheek, eyes searching her face. His other hand wandered near her shoulder, resting just at the knife’s hilt.

“I thought Toroq left,” she ground out, a flare of indignation filling her voice. “Remind me when I don’t feel like dying to be furious with him for being a huge liar.”

She is not dying,Toroq said, clearly exasperated.Nowheal her.

“Tell me that you love me,” Cazar whispered, leaning in and giving her a kiss, hoping to distract her.

“I love–ow, fuuuck!“ she screamed in agony as he wrenched the blade from her shoulder.

Evie jerked up, her forehead nearly cracking against his nose as she clutched at the open wound. He sliced his inner forearm with the knife before dropping the weapon with a clatter onto the floor, his own blood beginning to drip down his arm.

“Scratch that, I am so mad at both of you!” she seethed between her teeth, eyes watering as she gripped her bleeding shoulder. “That really hurt,” she cried a moment later, her chin wobbling.

The sight tore at his heart as her eyes filled with more tears, but he didn’t have time to console her. She needed to be healed, and if this was the fastest way to do it, then he wouldn’t waste another second. Cazar cupped the back of her head, keeping her upright as he brought his bloodied arm to her mouth. “Drink, Evadora.”

Evie grimaced, turning her head away on instinct. “I need a doctor,” she whimpered.

“You drink my blood any time you bite me, baby. This is no different, and it will help you feel better.” Shokar help him, he hoped it would. He brought his arm closer, keeping a firm hold on her.

“You called me baby,” she murmured, almost to herself. “Fine, fine, I’ll drink,“ she grumbled weakly.

Reluctantly, she opened her mouth, lips settling over the cut. She sucked, squeezing her eyelids shut as she winced. Cazar watched the blood seeping from her wounded shoulder, brows rising in surprise as, right before his eyes, it slowed to a faint trickle between her fingers before stopping altogether.

Even the paleness in her cheeks disappeared, the lines of pain and fatigue wiping away as if they’d never been.

Cazar’s lips parted in shock. How was any of this possible? He was healing her, just as Toroq had said. She should have required a healing pod and a physician, but now, her wound was sealing shut in a matter of moments.

Evie let go, licking her lips before she opened her eyes, her ocean-blue gaze meeting his. Cazar let out a relieved breath, fingers running through her golden hair.

“Evie, I’m so–”

She launched herself at him suddenly, arms and legs wrapping around him and squeezing. “I thought you were dead,” she cried hysterically in his ear.

Banding an arm around her waist, he clutched her to him, massaging her scalp as he held her protectively in his arms, breathing her in.

“You’re really okay?” she asked, her voice thick with tears.
