She rolled her eyes and got back to work. “Stalker,” she whispered.

Chuckling, I closed the door and walked over to her, peeking around her shoulder. “What are we making?”

She rolled her shoulder at me, lightly pushing back on my chest. The movement made me want to kiss her there, but instead, I took a step back to give her enough room to turn to the counter behind us.

I went to the sink to wash my hands, and she swatted at me with the dish rag. “Uh-uh, bathroom.”

Though not used to being told what to do, I listened to her anyway because I enjoyed it in a way. I quickly cleaned up, took a shower, and changed my smudged t-shirt. When I walked out, she had set the table up and had the most amazing looking meal on the table.

“Sit,” she said happily, pointing at a chair next to hers.

My mouth watered as I gazed down at the assortment of food on the table.

“These are fried pork rinds, and this is the fried plantain, rice, and black beans. I worked with what we bought earlier.”

“It looks amazing.”

“I hope it tastes good. I used to cook with my mom, but it’s been a while.” Her eyes saddened momentarily, and I hated seeing the light fade from her face.

Instantly, I put a fried plantain in my mouth and moaned because it was truly delicious. She looked up at me, and I nodded in appreciation, licking my fingers.

“This is delicious,” I said.

She chuckled and we proceeded to enjoy our delightful dinner. The sun was gradually setting, and everything felt perfectly tranquil. It was almost too comfortable, which made me uneasy. I couldn't let my guard down, and neither could Catalina.

"I need to go get an oil change. Do you think you'll be okay here alone for a bit?"

"I'll be fine. I'll tidy up and wait for you."

"I'll return as soon as I can. And hey, don't worry about the dishes. You cooked, so I'll clean."

Catalina grinned at me as I stepped outside. The mountains were ushering in a refreshing breeze. I hopped on my bike and rode away, relishing the cool night air. However, a gnawing feeling in my stomach urged me to hurry. Something didn't feel right, and I didn't want to take any risks.

CATALINA

As I was puttingthe dishes away in the dishwasher, I heard a loud noise coming from the back of the house. A motorcycle's engine was roaring down the path, and I quickly washed my hands before running to the door. As I swung it open, thinking it was my friend Snare, my heart sank as I came face to face with a complete stranger.

"Well, hello darlin'." His slimy grin made my skin crawl. I heard the sound of another motorcycle engine, followed by yet another, and my eyes widened in alarm. These were not friendly looking guys.

"Who are you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

"I could ask you the same, sweetheart." His gaze lingered on my chest, and I felt violated. I knew this situation wasn't going to end well.

"Well look what we've got here!" Another man walked in, towering over me like I was his prey.

I scanned the room, looking for anything that could serve as a weapon, and quickly grabbed the largest knife on the counter. My hand trembled as I held the blade in front of me, warning them not to come any closer.

"Oh, come on now, what the hell is going on in here?" A third man walked in, looking just as menacing as the others.

At this point, I knew I had to act fast. I backed away slowly, my eyes never leaving their intimidating figures. I needed to find a way out, but I couldn't let my guard down. These men were clearly dangerous, and I had to do whatever it takes to protect myself.

Without a second thought, I swung the knife at him, aiming for his face. It sliced through his cheek, producing a stream of blood but not enough to scar him permanently.

"What the fuck?!" he exclaimed, clearly shocked by my sudden attack. He lunged towards me, and I swung the blade again, but this time I missed him.

"Goddamn it, girl. What the fuck is wrong with you?" he yelled, clearly agitated by my actions.
