"It was an accident," I replied.

"I can see that, but the Prez wants answers."

"And you're here to get them for him?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I'm just here to ensure you get back safely. I can't guarantee that with the other members. Some of them are wild cards, and you should know that better than anyone."

"I'll take my chances."

"You seem like you've got some sense to you. I really wouldn't do this," he warned.

I looked down at the empty coffee mug in front of me and then glanced at Catalina. There was nothing I wouldn't do for her, and I wasn't going to protect her from one enemy just to put her in the hands of another. Because anyone who tried to hurt her, would be come just that, my enemy. I knew Jameson would lock me up, punish me, and then exploit Catalina, using her as bait to lure out her father.

I leaned forward, my anger rolling through me like a tidal wave. "No one is going to lay a finger on her. Not Jameson, not anyone."

"She's safer with us than on the road," Macabre argued.

"She's safe with no one," I retorted. "I vowed to protect her, which means she goes where I go."

Macabre sat back, his expression neutral as he threw a few dollars on the table. "It's your call."

I watched him walk out, knowing he'd be waiting for me in the parking lot. Catalina slid across the seat to face me. "What did he mean by that?"

I raised my eyes to hers, seeing the worry etched on her delicate face. "Whatever happens, you take my bag and run. There's money in there. Take a bus and hide, do you hear me?"

"Nothing's going to happen to you," she insisted.

I stared out the window, watching Macabre leaning against my motorcycle. "If it does, you run."

I stepped out of the booth, leaving her sitting there, gazing out the window at the swirling desert sand. The scene resembled something straight out of a Western movie. Only our two bikes were present, and no other cars were in sight.

"I understand what you're trying to do," he said.

"Then why don't you just let me finish what I have to do?"

“You know I can’t.” He flicked his cigarette away and extinguished it with his boot.

“So how are we going to do this?” I asked, extending my arms out to my sides. “You’re just gonna shoot me?”

Macabre rose from his perch on my seat and stared at me. “You know it’s not going to be easy.”

I took my stance a few feet away from him. “Give me your worst.”

“Goddamn it!” He shouted right before charging at me.

I knew this was going to be brutal. Our fists connected with jaws, blood trickled down from broken noses. He showed no signs of relenting, but I refused to surrender. As he swung at me again, his blow connected with the side of my temple, and I fell to a knee.

"Give it up already, man. This could all end so quickly if you'd just take responsibility," he implored.

"You know that's not going to happen. I won't let you take her," I responded.

I lunged at him, taking him down and delivering several punches before he managed to take me down and grasp the lapels of my jacket.

"I'm not here for her!"

I spat out blood and sand as I glared up at him. "Do you think I'm fucking stupid?"

I landed another punch, sending him crashing down. As he lay there, he landed another blow that sent me tumbling to the ground. In the distance, I heard Catalina scream my name.
