“I’m going to fucking kill you!” He roared, raising his blade as he ran toward us.

I fired another shot into his leg. I didn’t want to kill him; I just wanted him to stop. He fell to his knee, still trying to crawl towards us, and I kicked him in the temple, hard enough to knock him out. It didn’t take long for campus police to come storming through the dorm. I still had the gun in my hand, and they shoved me down to the floor. I heard Lucy scream for them to release me. That I wasn’t the perpetrator, but they didn’t listen.

As they walked me past Sam’s stretcher, he flashed a sinister smile my way. What he said next would resonate with me for a long time.

“You go near her again, and I’ll find her and make you regret it for the rest of your life.”

After everything that happened, my scholarship was terminated, and I was expelled from the University. My life had crumbled in one stupid moment. I had a restraining order placed against me for bringing a weapon on campus. Even though Lucy tried to reach me, her parents had her forced onto a flight to California. I had the option to follow her, but Sam's threat to harm her for my actions was too real to ignore. I knew him. He meant every word he’d said to me. He’d hurt her just to get back at me, and I wouldn’t allow that.

The burden of regret is suffocating, and I've carried it with me every day since I left her behind. But it was the only way to ensure her safety from his wrath. She was the most important thing in the world to both of us, but he couldn't accept that she was mine.

It's said that if something belongs to you, it will always find a way back into your life, even if it's in the most unexpected way. Fate, however, can have a cruel sense of humor.
