“You’re all right. I’ll go fast,” he soothes, stroking my thigh till the stinging subsides and it is replaced by a heated tingle that races up higher.

His tone changes as the conversation switches to caretaking. His voice is gentler, his movements slower. He moves onto the other knee, this time holding me in place as he disinfects the cuts.

“I… I stole from you,” I repeat. “I stole the Keystone. I was going to bring it back, give it to Eden or something, but you had no idea I was going to do that. You shouldn’t be okay with this… with me. I wouldn’t be.”

“But I am.”

I look around the hallway, waiting for someone to pop out from one of the rooms to tell me this is all a joke.

He captures my chin in his claws and turns it to face roughly towards his.

“I am.” His voice drops low and serious, with a deep throaty rumble. “I’m more than okay with you just as you are.”

I try to jerk my head away from his grasp, to get a moment of reprieve from the intensity of his stare. I want to crawl across the table and hide in some dark corner of a closet somewhere to put together the pieces of myself that Titan has so thoroughly taken apart. But he won’t let me look away, and so I stare into his eyes, his earnest, sincere, eyes and the way I know everything he is telling me is true. I believe him. I am enough for him, and I don’t understand.

“But I took what was yours.”

“I don’t care.”

“How can you not care?” I feel anger rise in my chest, and I shift restlessly between his claws. “I had everything taken from me. You just don’t get over someone using you like that.”

“You weren’t using me, baby girl.”

“How do you know that?” My question comes out uncertain but fierce. I truly want to know the answer. “How can you be so sure?”

“You’ve only stolen from me because you are afraid.” He continues to hold my chin in his claw and grips the disinfectant with his tail.

I’m not afraid, I’m never afraid, I want to scream. But I recognize the thought as a lie instantly. Still, I desperately want to say it out loud and make Titan see that I have no weaknesses.

“Afraid of what?” I ask, to keep from lying.

He leans forward so his face is only inches from mine and smiles slowly, exposing the bright white tips of his teeth. He’s so confident that suddenly I don’t feel so unsure of whatever he is going to say.

“You’re afraid of what I made you feel. Afraid of how much you care for me.”

He smiles again, like what he just said was simple, just a fact or an inevitability. He holds my face still as his tail pats the disinfectant over a cut on my chin, and I hiss in pain.

“I got you, baby girl,” he murmurs, eyes flicking from the cut to me. The tip of his tail soothingly brushes over my cheekbone and pushes a lock of my hair back behind my ear.

“I know,” I whisper, not yet prepared to deal with what Titan said.

He smooths a Band-Aid over the cut, and his tail grazes my breasts. My nipples react instantly, pulling tight, and I feel a heated flush across my cheeks.

“Tell me I’m wrong, little thief. Tell me Kathleen and Richard taking advantage of you at eighteen didn’t scare you. Tell me that didn’t make you afraid to care about someone else.”

His chest rises and falls in quick succession, and his tail thumps rhythmically against the tabletop, as if this thought has been building up inside of him for so long, he is now unburdened after pushing it out. My gaze lingers on his lips, firm and slightly parted.

“Tell me it doesn’t terrify you to know someone else cares for you,” he continues, “that I care for you and would rather you steal every item out of our home than give you up. Tell me that doesn’t scare the shit out of you.”

Titan has given me an answer, but I don’t want to think about how right it feels or how I’m absolutely scared shitless about taking the next step. I want to avoid it all. I need to avoid it all.

“Can’t you just kiss me?” I ask. “It would be so much easier if you kissed me.”

Titan places the disinfectant and the first aid kit on the chair. He faces me slowly, and I expect him to lean in to meet my lips, but I gasp when his tail wraps around my bare waist and pulls me up the table so my breasts are pressed into his chest.

“Oh,” I exhale, feeling with each breath the way my nipples rub against his leathery skin, sending tiny lightning bolts of pleasure straight to the core of me.

“Just a kiss?” he asks.
