He grinned and dragged me closer between his legs until I grabbed his shoulders and held onto him. His eyes darkened, and his nostrils flared.

“Tell me about your symptoms. What can we do to help you?”

“How much do you know about schizophrenia and bipolar?”

He shrugged a shoulder. “Enough. I’ve studied humans for centuries. I know mental illnesses like the back of my hand. But I want to knowyouand how I can helpyou.”

That was . . . so sweet. I’d never had an interaction like this with someone. Especially not a man.

I smiled softly and bit my bottom lip as I ran my hands through his short, cropped black hair. His hair was soft and long enough for me to play with it. He watched me with heavy-lidded eyes and groaned softly under his breath.

“Keeping calm will help me calm down,” I said as I still ran my fingers through his hair. “Reality checking is great. If I start spouting about how I can read minds, then it would be great to help me by saying something like, ‘I hear what you’re saying, but I want you to know that you can’t read minds.’ And then talk about something else to distract me and move the topic of the conversation to something else.

“When I have a manic episode, I’m not sure if there’s anything that you can do. I’ve blown all my money at stores while manic. When I’m depressed, I just want to curl up in my bed and sleep. I’ve heard medicine helps with mania, and I’ve always wanted that. So I think you’re already helping me by taking me to someone who can get me on meds.”

Legion closed his eyes and inhaled. At his exhale, he opened his eyes. “You’ve gone all this time without medicine?”

I nodded.

He looked away and briefly shook his head. Annoyance flashed over his face, and instantly I drew away from him. Physically and emotionally. I must’ve said something that he didn’t like.

Legion noticed my retreat and snapped his eyes back to me, and yanked me to him.

“Oh, no, you don’t,” he growled. “You’re not pulling away from me, kitten. You’re stuck with us.”

“But you—”

“I’m angry at the world you came from and the bullshit they put you through. I knew humans were selfish creatures, but from the sounds of it, they allowed you to go this whole time without help.” He shook his head and tsked. “It’s been a few decades since I’ve visited your world. Why didn’t they help you?”

I drew my eyebrows.

How much did he not know? I thought he would’ve known everything the government did to us, especially to women.

I opened my mouth.

“The healer has an opening. Mephistopheles made a few phone calls to people to get her in,” Asmodeus said as he came into the room.

I turned my head and watched Asmodeus cross the room and stand beside me. Legion stood, and I backed away from him. He pinched my chin and turned my face toward him, forcing me to look at him. His eyes were dark, and this time not with lust. Irritation burned in their depths, and his jaw was clenched.

“We’re not done with this conversation. We’ll talk later,” he warned.

“What are you talking about?” Asmodeus asked.

Legion stared at me, not allowing me to look away.

“Later,” he said.

At that, he dropped his hand and took mine. Asmodeus placed his hand on my lower back, and the two men walked me out of the bedroom.

My stomach knotted, and my mind spun.

How did these demons not know what happened to the United States? There was something more to it that he didn’t tell me.

I had fully expected us to drive to the healer, as they said. Nope. Instead, the healer showed up seconds after I went to the front of the guys’ home. I’d expected the healer to be a man, not a woman. A part of me was relieved that she was a woman because of everything that happened in the fallen country. I wasn’t comfortable being around a man.

Except for these men.Mymen.

I didn’t want to linger on the thought and worry about how fast my feelings had become for these guys. I didn’t care that they were demons, either. They saved me from the shit hole of the United States. I’d give them anything to stay with them.
