“You really don’t want to know,” she says with a smile. “Let me know when the burning starts.”

“Burning?” I squeak. “What do you mean, burning?”

“I’ll know if you start to feel like you’re burning from the inside out that the potion is doing what I want it to do.”

“You didn’t say—”

Red hot pain flashes through my veins, sweat coating my brow as if I’m standing under the shower head in my bathroom at the house. I groan as the burning sensation intensifies, forcing me to roll onto my side and bring my legs up to my chest.

“Oh shit, it hurts,” I cry out as the burning becomes worse. I didn’t think it could, but it feels like I’m the main course on spinning pike over a fire about to be served. “Please make it stop,” I beg.

“This is good, Poison, let it do what it needs to,” Rowena says, trying to comfort me.

“Breathe, Poison,”Kevin says reassuringly in my mind.

White noise pulses in my head and I feel like my tendons and muscles are being melted off my bones, sweat mixing with tears as I cry out from the onslaught of the pain. Even my wounds didn’t hurt this much when I awoke earlier. I scream as my limbs lock, my body trembling. My body and mind must be going into shock, as I begin to shake violently. My vision becomes blurred and short pants escape through my clenched teeth as I try to breathe the best I can through this.

Everything becomes heavy as I fight to push through the pain, it feels like the fire burning within is making everything close in on me. The outlines of everything in the room disappears as blackness engulfs my vision.

“Kevin, what is…”

“Sleep, Poison, I’ll watch over you.”

CHAPTERELEVEN

“Poison?”The voice whispers in my sleep-clouded mind trying to rouse me.

I groan, not wanting to face reality, I’m comfortable. I wiggle myself deeper into the mattress, pulling the bed sheet further up to my chin to try and hide myself from the arse who wants to wake me.

“Pop! C’mon, wake up,”Kevin’s voice growls louder in my head.

“I don’t want to,”I whine like a petulant child.“Kevin, please let me sleep.”

He mutters something under his breath in reply. I don’t catch it because I’m already falling back into the dream state abyss. I turn over slowly, trying to get myself into a more comfortable position. I brace myself for the pain, but I manage the action with ease. Hmm… curious.

My eyes flutter open, the bright fluorescent lights overhead blinding me. I’m forced to cover my eyes from the onslaught. The sleepy haze starts to dissipate and I can hear people chatting deeper in my room. The bed groans underneath me, and I shoot up, my head whipping around to take in my surroundings.

“I blacked out again, didn’t I?” I ask him.

“Yes,” he replies.

“Oh crap!”

I spot Miss Furnell at the other side of the room talking to a guy I recognise. He has a hand covering his right eye and I can see blood dripping down his face. I’m sure I saw him training with The Vasi the day Ajax put me through the trauma of that run. I watch as she gets to work, pulling his hand away. Something silver is sticking out from underneath his eye, gently she removes it and my stomach rolls.

“Fascinating, isn’t it?”Kevin asks, I look to my right, finding him at a normal size at the side of my bed. His eager red eyes tracking what’s happening with the guy’s treatment.

“You’re sick,”I say.

“Look, now it’s gone. He’s healing,”he says.

I look back to the guy and, sure enough, now that the object has been removed, he’s close enough on the bed he’s sitting on for me to see his skin slowly knitting back together. I blow out a breath in awe. I so wish I was able to do that. If I could, I wouldn’t be laid up in this bed for god knows how long until my wounds heal.

“Ah, you’re awake.” The soft lilt of Miss Furnell pulls my gaze off the guy’s face which is completely healed and it hasn’t left a single blemish.

“Hi,” I say with a welcoming smile, I’m so glad that she’s the only one here. Well, other than the other patient.

“How’re you feeling, dear?” she asks.
