“Nope,” I snap. “I’m done doing whatever someone demands of me, I will do what I want, when I want.”

I push away from the table, the legs screeching across the floor as I do, and I grab my now empty food bags and stuff them into the bin on my right. I look around the shopping centre trying to see if I can spot a place to watch a film or do something else that can get me out of going home.

I see signs lined up across the front of a shop at the other end of the building. The pictures are film posters. I smile wide, then I hear the tinkling giggle again. I look at the little girl who was giggling at me earlier. My brows jump into my hairline as I see her looking directly at where Kevin is. The little douche is smaller in size now but his face is level with hers as she leans over the back of her chair.

“Don’t,” I snarl at him. “You do anything and I swear, Kevin, I will drop kick you across this building.”

“Issuing violence now,” he throws back. “You know for a fact I’d swallow you whole so you may want to rethink that.”

“She’s a tiny child,” I snap. “Why’re you looking at her like you want to eat her?”

“I’m curious is all,” he says, looking at me briefly, then his attention goes back to her. “She can see me, but I can’t sense anything supernatural about her.”

“What?” I breathe, a feeling of dread starts to build in my stomach.

“No, she’s not one of them,” he says. “I can’t sense any of the hunters around here either. There’s no need to panic.”

“No need,” I explode. “You’re telling me she can see you but you can’t sense her as a supe which means she’s a potential hunter or there are other hunters here and you’re telling me not to panic?!”

I gasp for air as a heavy feeling sits on my chest. What am I doing? This is a trap! Someone must have done something to tip them off. But who?

“Poison!” Kevin snaps. “For god’s sake, you’re practically human so what would a hunter want from you if anything?”

“I may be as close to a human as can be,” I growl, the feeling of dread rolling around faster in my gut. “But you’re not.”

Kevin’s head whips up and the speed in which he does it has the already growing dread swirling like a manic. His head whips around, looking in all directions, and I watch as he slowly slithers backwards away from the little girl. Her father says something to her, pulling her attention away from the pair of us.

“You still want to go watch a film?” Kevin asks, his eyes on me.

“Erm?” My unease is growing, but I know if anything was to go haywire, I’ve got him here. But then again, I can see how uncomfortable he is about something. “No, its okay, let’s go back home.”

I see some of the tension leave him as I start to head back towards the entrance. The crowds are thicker now, forcing me to push my way through as people bump and bash into me, growling about how rude I am when they’re the ones who are repeatedly hitting me. What the hell is going on? Where have all these people come from?

“Kevin?”

“What’s up?”he replies back, I’ve never been more thankful that we can talk in my head. I look over my shoulder and I have to hold back the laugh as I see people almost falling over themselves as they try to walk through him.

The thing is, he may be able to make himself invisible to people but they can still walk into him, they just can’t see him. It’s funny the amount of confused faces there are as he slithers his way behind me. People are almost tripping up and I can clearly see thewhat the hell is going onlook on their faces. A high-pitched whistling screech echoes through the air.

“Poison, duck!” Kevin screams.

I do as he says on instinct, dropping into a crouch. My head whips up as the sound passes over my head. My eyes widen when I find an arrow heading straight for my best friend.

“Kevin,” I yell, my emotions turning full throttle with dread and fear.

His huge tail whips out, knocking the arrow out of the way, and I watch wide eyed as his size grows rapidly. I hear a loud commotion, making me jump to my feet to stand by his side, my eyes frantically looking him over to see if he’s injured. When raised voices catch my attention, I look to the sound, seeing a group of men all decked out in black clothing, with small bags and pockets covering most of them.

“What—”

“Hunters! Run!”

The command in his voice has me taking off. I don’t bother to look, pushing through the people who yell at me, but I don’t stop, my mind on autopilot.

“Head into a shop or something,” he shouts. “We need to lose them.”

“Why are they after me?” I ask, my breathing is laboured as my heart hammers in my chest.”

“Move it!”
