Every member of the clan wears black clothes and always look so damn pale.

“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on?!” I snap, losing the battle with my emotions.

“Watch your tone, girl!” Mr Dane chastises me, and the look of pure hatred on his face has me recoiling away from him.

“Remember your place!” my aunt snaps at me. The hard glint in her eyes is there like every other time she has to say something to me. “We have agreed this is the best course of action to see if we can remedy the situation.”

“What?”

“Kevin will not be attending with you. But it’s about time we try to bring forth your abilities. So you are attending Morgansyth Academy.”

Panic fills me.

“I…” My words break off as the feeling of floating takes over my body, then it’s like I’m in a washing machine on a spin cycle and I still have no idea what’s going on.

Going to the human world I could handle, going to Morgansyth Academy… I’m not so sure.

CHAPTERONE

CHAPTER 1

My body swirls around the portal, my stomach rolling with every turn. If I knew I could grab onto something to stop me moving, I would. My mind’s struggling to keep up with everything as the blackness churns around me. Little speckles of colours shine out of the darkness, like I’m looking at glitter particles in black paint. The colour shifts from pitch to dark, then a brilliant-white stream of light cuts through and I can’t stop the scream from escaping me.

The portal coughs me out, and I scream again, my arms flailing around as I plummet. My body hits the floor with a thud, and something cracks as yet another scream is torn from my throat. The pounding in my head grows as I try to fight the pain of whatever injuries I have. It takes a lot of my energy to open my eyes, but I finally manage it, expecting another pitch-black place.

I’m surprised when trees come into view, and the pounding begins to ease just a fraction as I turn my head from side to side. Where the hell am I? I’m surrounded by woodland that looks like the perfect setting for a masked murderer to live. You know, the creepy dudes that are in all the horror movies you watch to scare yourself.

“Kevin, what the hell is going on?”I ask, opening up the link between us. The connection feels like it’s buzzing in my mind but then there’s nothing. I can’t feel him like I usually can. Panic crawls through my veins as I call out his name again and still no answer, it’s like he isn’t there anymore.

They’ve really stopped him coming with me.

My stomach drops at the lack of my friend intruding on my mind. He has to be doing something, that is the only explanation I’m willing to accept. That has to be it. He has to know I’ve disappeared by now… unless…? The first crack in my heart begins to splinter. Because I know there’s only one other way to break a mind link officially, and that’s for one of them to die.

No, he can’t be dead, he can’t. My aunt’s words from the party come to mind and tears pool in my eyes. She’s always hated him, so why wouldn’t she use this as an opportunity to get rid of him with me out of the way? She’s always hated him, I don’t remember the first time he showed up but from conversations I’ve heard through the years, he turned up minutes after I was born and has been with me ever since. I’ve heard people calling him a bad omen, my aunt being one of them.

“What are you doing on the floor, girl?” a burly voice growls, making me jump out of my skin.

I look around the soft cold ground beneath me, but I can’t see anyone until a huge shadow looms over me, blocking out some of the moonlight. I try my best to scramble to my feet, without antagonising my injured wrist. But that’s a feat in itself.

Tears fill my eyes and I hiss at the pain as my senses are assaulted with a stabbing sensation. I have to bite my bottom lip to stop the whimper as I watch the newcomer step out into the open. Streams of moonlight glint on bronzed skin, allowing me to see the person as tall as a mountain standing before me. Heavily muscled arms folded across a huge chest are at eye level, and I follow the trail upwards, having to crane my neck to meet his eyes.

“Who are you?” he rumbles, and an all-consuming urge to run fills me as I just stare.

I’ve always been good at guessing what people are, even with my lack of abilities, and this guy most definitely has to be a dragon.

My throat dries and I continue to stare at the hard lines on his face, taking in his onyx eyes, and it’s like we’re in some kind of stand-off.

You’re all good, he probably won’t hurt you? There’s no reason for him to do that, I don’t think? Unless he’s here to stop me from trying to find out what happened to Kevin.

His brows furrow the longer I stand here in silence, leaving his question unanswered, and I finally take a deep breath to calm my nerves.

“Where am I?” I murmur, and my voice sounds weak, even to my ears. I really wish it sounded stronger, but I’m vulnerable being the dud that I am, then add in being in an unknown place… well, I’m screwed.

“You’re on the outskirts of Morgansyth Academy,” he says patronizingly.

My eyes widen at the name. No, he’s lying?! I can’t be here? Not yet?I look around the forest, my heart plummeting to my feet at the sight of the enormous wall off in the distance that spreads as far as I can see across the forest.

“Now, I’ll ask again. Who are you?”
